PCM Ta 152H-0

Well I've been messing with bits and bobs for this so I thought it'd be a worthwhile tribute to those who've fallen.

 

Getting the PCM kit to look OK isn't too bad a task. Getting it to look nearly as good as the ZM kit is going to be harder - but I'll have a go.

 

It'll be built to represent Green 4 a Ta 152H-0 with a wooden tail. This is the machine currently languishing in the NASM 'reserve' collection.

OK, some progress.

Tail sawn off, reinforced and (as noted by Steve Gallacci) cartridges for flares removed for re-placement in slightly diff location. Note that I managed to cut the fuselages different lengths- argghh!! Time to shim.

I have always thought that the front upper fuselage decking of the Ta 152H was one of the areas that really defined the aircraft. The PCM part is basically correct but lacks the finer points. So, off it came and replacement with a sheet of plastic to strengthen and keep this area in shape. Note that I've also cut back the wing root fairing at the front as wing and engine cowl met at a near 90 degree angle here.

I had initially tried to adapt the PCM upper deck part but decided on a new course of action when I bought a ZM Ta 152H. The upper decking on this kit is a very good rendition of the actual part and with my shim installed I had a very good match between PCM and ZM parts.

Here is the original ZM part placed onto the PCM fuselage. Fit is better than it looks in this (crappy) photograph. I've also started sanding the forward cowl sides and lower surface to get the tapered profile and lose some of the 'radius-ing' that PCM applied to the lower cowl to wing transition that shouldn't be there. Also applied filler and card to make up lost material where wing root fairing removed.

Here's another crappy photo (I promise to try to take some better shots) which hopefully gives some idea of the difference between PCM front end (right) and PCM + ZM front end (left).

This photo precedes the installation of the spacing part and you can see the mismatch at the front between PCM and ZM parts in width terms. Also just visible is the difference between the two front wing root areas. And yes, I do have two (actually three PCM 152Hs, one Jerry Rutman version and the ZM kit - I like Ta 152s)

I've also been working on the Jerry Rutman replacement wing inner sections. The irregular mating surfaces are the result of using panel lines to make the cuts/join. Note visible gaps here are due to parts not being glued together and subsequently sagging. Basically these joints can be as good as you are at cutting carefully along the panel lines.

Note the plastic/greenstuff area at front of wing root. This is where I've extended wing surface to meet cowl without the fillet previously removed. This photo pre-dates the revision to upper cowl approach and sees a strip of plastic glued as beginning of first (abandoned) attempt to improve PCM part.

 

Tail is JRs replacement part depicting wooden tail with Hasegawa 190D-9 horizontal tail surfaces (all dry fitted to see what she's like).

I've also managed to mold and cast the ZM upper deck.

Terrific work Matt. Must try to get hold of a Ta 152 kit myself one day (the closest I have is an incomplete Falcon vac kit). Good to see some updates in this GB too, as it appears to have gone to sleep of late (I'm as guilty as anyone in that regard).

Looking good Matt. I think that this is the very first time I have seen my correction being used! The ZM kit arriving really took the steam out of PCMs' kit and consequently,my correction so this thread is a treat for me. Thanks!
