Due to my period of service - after Vietnam but before the new benefits of the 1990s and later, the only VA benefits I'm entitled to are the home loan (which almost nobody even does anymore because rates are so low anyway), and medical benefits.  I have zero VA education benefits or anything else.  So I applied and was enrolled in VA medical.  Got the notification today.  I don't necessarily plan on using it, at least not now, but it's nice to know I have it available.  The online application process couldn't have been easier. It literally took me five minutes to complete, and I got the notification in the mail three days later.

It used to be that all VA med services were free IIRC, but now it's based on your income. The military today takes WAY better care of its personnel and the benefits are out if this world. Now they have "forever" education benefits. Mine went away after 10 years and I can't even get my $1200 back I put in for the Army College Fund.
I wish they would take care of ALL VETERANS, and not just today's troops!!!

Actually it's not. Once you're in, you're in.

At least you have benefits. Canucks get absolutely nothing at all once out. Wounded or not, they toss you to the curb.

Another thing to note on the VA benefits is that while the PPACA is in full effect, you qualify as having insurance coverage under the IRS guidelines so no tax penalty.

Shortly after getting out in 1991, I ended up getting blood poisoning.  I went to the VA and got treated for free.  Saved my life.  But I've never received any mail from them or any notification of benefits.

Surely, in the UK you still get NHS cover?
