RLM 79 question

I'm working on the Cyber-Hobby BF109E-7 Trop and I'm trying to find the 'correct' colour version for RLM 79.

I've tried Vallejo Model Air RLM 79. The colour looks pretty brown to me but I'm no expert on RLMs.

I have two questions.

1.  What brand makes the most accurate RLM 79?

I have Vallejo Model Air RLM 79, Model Masters Enamel RLM 79, Model Masters Acrylic RLM 79 (seems very yellow to me), Humbrol Enamel 249 (looks close to the Vallejo Model Air).  I don't have access to Mr. Color here in Calgary unfortunately.  I can also mix a batch using Tamiya XF 59 and XF64 (at 3:1)

Any takers on this one?   :)

2.  I've been having a hell of time spraying the Vallejo Model Air RLM 79.  I've thinned it as per instructions (about 1:5, thinner to paint), tried 2:5 and 1:1 and also tried adding some Vallejo Flow Retarder.

Every time I'm getting lots of crud on the tip (Iwata HP-CS, .35mm at 15-20 psi), clean it off and the paint comes out in spatters, almost like it is dry coming out of the brush.

I applied Vallejo Model Air RLM 78, with no issues at all.  It went down very smooth, fast and with no clogging or spatter issues.  I'm trying out black basing, so the next coats were thinned a lot (4:1 thinner to paint) and no issues.

My question is this:  what am i doing wrong?

Thanks for any replies.

There were two variants of 79. Early pale sandy color and from 1943 a rather dark brownish shade.

Also 78 had different shades. 41 stark blue shade. 43 light blue grey shade.

Try to get the Kiroff color chart.

I am working to on a Dragon Bf109E-7 Trop. I have both MM enamel and akril and will use akril since it is lighter yellowish shade which i think is better for early 109s.

As for vallejo do u use new formula thiner which is without color. Old thiner was almost white in color and was very bad. I use new formula and have to say that realy like their colors but their shades are tragicly wrong for Luftwaffe RLM standard

Model Master or Gunze for me. I also use Vallejo paints in general, although not RLM79, and havent encountered any problems like you describe with their paint. Maybe a 'rogue' batch thats dried out?

Hi D. B. I found it in the Monogram book on german camouflage by Merrick and Hitchcock.

The aircraft where transfered directly from the western front to Africa in grey camo (RLM 74-75-76). To tone them down rapidly, since the Italian where there, they borrowed some paint

while waiting for their stock of paint to arrived.

And if you have access to Luftwaffe Colors from Smith and Gallaspy in Monogram Aviation Publication, there is a nice chapter on North Africa theater.

Cheers

Thanks, Andre, appreciate it.

The subject of the use of Italian paints on Luftwaffe aircraft has been debated for many years. For the latest information available I recommend you take a look at the later Ken Merrick publication - Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings 1933-1945, Vol. 1, 2004; Classic Publishing; pp. 150-158. The author addresses the question regarding use of Italian paints on Luftwaffe aircraft in the North African theater. He stipulates that Italian paints were used in conjunction with Luftwaffe stocks, but at a later date, subsequent to the Wehrmacht's  withdrawal from the African continent.
