Hasegawa Ki43

Learning/practicing everything at once here including posting images to these forums.

I have reduced them in size to use the post file feature here but its been a very hit and miss affair on top of very hit and miss photography. I seemed to either make them too big or too small. Will have to work on the "just right" thing. :D

On the bright side I have made some progress this morning with understanding exposure controls - which has assisted me to photograph inside the black hole of the Ki43 'pit.

What I have done here is try my hand at scratch building. The kit's pit is basically bare with only ribbing detail provided. No boxes, dials or plumbing or any sort. Not even an approximation of a throttle quadrant. With only basic references I have tried to busy-up the pit. My aim was to see what I could do with bits of wire and plastic and also to get a feel for the results that different levels of attention to detail and precision will provide.

All good learning experience and alot of fun. So I thought I'd share.

Thanks for the encouragement. Most encouraging

A better camera would be a big help.

Arrrrgggghhhhh! It's the workman not the tool! I just spent $1,000 Australian on that camera. Only problem is I haven't really worked out how to use it yet. I managed to fudge the exposure to get the photo of the black hole... Best practice on the focus thing next methinks ;) (yep - I did get a tripod).

It's probably too late but Eduard makes a detail set that greatly improves this model.

Yeah... thanks, but one of the reasons I started this one was to get some useful practice while I wait for the Eduard and Rutman bits 'n bobs for my Zero and P-38. If I had put this one on ice waiting for parts as well I would have been reduced to whittlin sticks or discussing home renovations with the good wife! Also, the Eduard site looked like their enhancement kit for the Ki43 mainly covers external stuff - didn't see any 'pit accessories.

Anyway, thanks again for the kind words chaps.

The black art of scribing explored. A bit of primer thrown at it to regain some focus and to encourage me that some progess is actually happening in between the slippin' and the cussin'. Still plenty of repair work to do...

The cowl was basically a smooth casting so I'm pleased with the result there. The fuselage and wings, well, they've been a learing expereince.

One thing I have learned for sure is that trying to re-scribe raised panel lines and still retain raised rivet detail is a hopeless dream, dooming the newbie to frustration. I'm going to have to put one of those custom 1/32 riveting wheels on my shopping list.

Wow,

looks really nice mate! Good job so far.

To the camera i can say, i had the same problem with the focus. Try to go not so close to the plane. I shoot my pics from more distance with 3.2 megapixel. If the pic is on my PC, it´s very large, then i can cut out the detail i want, and its in focus with a good size then.

Seems that you are on the right way, last pics are much better
