Michael Satin
Here's a photo of the gap between the front bulkhead and the top of the fuselage. A small tank goes in the slot on the top of the bulkhead, so this should cover most of the gap.
Michael Satin
Another photo, this shows the drawing of the cockpit floor in the instructions versus the actual part (unmodified by me).
Michael Satin
Here's the kit tailwheel with the "hard rubber tire" for carrier use next to the kit supplied tire. I just reamed out a piece of plastic tubing until it fit snuggly on the wheel.
Michael Satin
And here's the actual kit fuselage compared to the drawing in the instructions. All of the drawings look like this. Again, just interesting. I'd rather the plastic was correct and the drawings wrong than the other way around!
Steve C
Michael, The reason that the floor drawing doesn't match the part is because the floor drawing is incorrect. The drawing shows the part before it was retooled by Trumpeter to more closely match the REAL Wildcat. The instructions were NOT retooled. As to the fuse drawings again they would more closely match the original release plastic parts and not the retooled parts. Also there was a very good review of the retooled kit on Hyperscale, and as far as I could tell it was MUCH closer to an F4F than the original tooling. As to the gap between the bulkhead and the top of the fuse, perhaps you could use some modeling skills to close that up http://kits.kitreview.com/f4f432reviewbg_2.htm Steve
Michael Satin
Steve C has pointed out that my comments above may be viewed as being harsh about the kit. No way! As a confirmed F4F junkie, I'm THRILLED with it! I just wanted to let everyone know about some of the things I'm finding as I go along, some of which are a bit amusing. If you like USN/MC stuff, this kit is a MUST! And well worth it. As I've said about the 1/24 Spit on a different forum here, thanks Trumpeter, keep it up! Now how about a 1/32 Hurricane? ChrisS
Michael, What scheme are you doing? Please keep the pics rolling in, and consider a full article. We could use one on that kit!
Lee White
Hey Mike! Thanks for the wildcat update. Hope to see it at the first Legacy meeting!! BTW, When where ois it? Gotta make sure I'll be there! Chesley (AKA Lee to most everybody else here)
Michael Satin
I'm planning to do a carrier based airplane and, as I'm such a Big E freak, it has to be from Enterprise. To that end I'm looking either at: 6-F-20: Donald Runyon, top scoring Navy F4F pilot or 10-F-19: Stanley "Swede" Vejstasa, top scoring Navy pilot for 1942 Haven't made up my mind yet. I know they're both kind of plain, but I figure the -3 is coming, and then I'll get to use the big red, white and blue markings! I will work on an article, but at the speed I build I wouldn't be surprised if someone beats me to the punch. Michael
Michael Satin
I'm going pretty slow on this one, more my fault than the kit's. Anyway, here's the cockpit. I used the Eduard seat and belts.
Michael Satin
And here's the engine. I added wiring from copper wire: By the way, I did the left wing to allow it to fold but the outer panel drooped pretty badly, so I had to glue it solid. Oh well!
