Turning a Zeke into a Hamp

Hi all,

What would this group build be without a Zero? The subject of this build is the mid-war A6M3 model 32 using the Hasegawa "Collectors' Hi-Grade Series' Zero. This kit has a number of white metal parts -undercarriage, prop, spinner, seat, headrest, tailwheel- to replace the inaccurate plastic parts, but leaves enough room to improvement :).

The main recognition feature of the Hamp were its squared-off wingtips. To obtain thes a scale drawing was enlarged to the "proper" scale, wingtips cut out, pasted to a piece of styrene sheet and these are used as templates to get four identical wingtips.

Here the wingtips of the model 52 are removed. The wings of the model 52 & 32 have the same span, 11 meters. Next to the wing is the template for the new wingtips. After these are cut out and added to the wings the airfoil sections will be build up using Milliput, followed by a prolonged sanding session... :) .

Cheers,

Hans

Be very careful...the A6M3 wing is different from the A6M5 wing in more respects than just the wingtips. See the attached images from the A6M Aero Detail book. The flap is shorter in span than is the A6M5 version leaving a noticable gap on the underside of the wing that the A6M5 does not have.

Also adding my thanks here to. I 'm changing the 21st Century A6M2/3 into a 3 and would have missed that little detail too. Hans I like your method of extending the wing tips so much I'm gonna STEAL it for mine ;)

I don't know if I'll get her going for the group build but I've been thinking about it. I'll have to see how time goes. I've way too many half started kits on the go now to start another.

Just out of interest so that maybe not everyone is doing the same aircraft, what scheme are you going to do on your A6M3s? I tend to do one in green-gray all over. ;)

Sabre,

Are you doing the '22 or the "32? The '32 has the same span as the model 52, the '22 used the wing of the A6M2. By the way, the method of extending the wings has been registered by me ... I have been advised to do this by a well-known producer of aero-engines whose-name-shall-not-be-mentioned... :o :D

A group build (by means of subtle pressure from the peer group) is a good excuse to build and finish a model. ;)

Cheers,

Hans

Or this one, for which I need to do a little digging. The pilot, Takeo Tanimizu of the Tainan Air Group on Formosa in 1944 seems to have flown two aircraft with similar inscription or so I remember....

Charles,

For reasons only known to me and the inland robbers -excuse I mean inland revenue- I prefer banktransfers into my account on the Cayman Islands..

The 21st C kit is supposed to be a MOD 22, but has the cowling for the MOD 32 and the wings off a MOD 52. I figure the best thing to do with it is to convert it to a MOD 32 Hamp, which involves doing the wing tip mod that Hans is doing.

As for finish, I have the 48th Tamiya Hamp for use as a pattern and will probably be doing a grey/green bird that has the latter field applied dark green over its topsides based on markings in that kit. Not sure which one yet, I'm a ways off on doing that one. I have the Tamiya A6M2 which I plan on doing in the markings of Saburo Sakai, so that will take care of the gray/green ones. His story is one of the first ones I read as a lad, and I've always admired him.
