Fw-190 A8 R/2 Sturmbock "Yellow 17" - JG 3 - FIN!!

Well ladies and gents, I'm back once again to start my next project.  Some of you may remember my mildly feeble attempt at some humor HERE with a little guessing game about a next build of mine. It didn't work out so well, as I got a bit irked at the fact that I had ordered the EP pit a LONG time ago and it still wasn't in by the time I was ready to start the build, so I moved on.

The Eagle Parts cockpit has been here for a while now, and now that Im completely finished with teh XF5U-1,  I'm ready to actually commence this build!

With all of these 1/32nd B-17 builds going on, I figured they needed something to shoot at them so this is my next project, a Focke Wolf Fw-190 A-8 R/2 “Sturmbachâ€.  In this case, I will be building Willi Ungers mount “Yellow 17†of JG 3 based in Barth Germany, as she was in the spring of 1944 –

Yellow 17 had the unusual "Krebs-Gerat" mounted center line, replacing the center fuel tank/bomb.  The Krebs-Gerat, was a (fairly UN-successful) 21 cm rocket that was carried under the belly of the Fw 190s, and fired rearward, into a bomber stream. This was not very effective, but was unusual since not many Fw 190s carried them. This will all be scratch built.

I will be basing the model off of the venerable Hasegawa Fw-190 A-8 kit, with a PLETHORA of AM thrown at this thing, including a Black Dog A-8 R/2 conversion.

I REALLY had to do some “between builds cleaning†so spent a few days really going through the man-cave. This included completely revamping my spray booth, by taking it completely apart, cleaning it (and the man-cave overall) from top to bottom, and replacing the 3 filters, along with the work-top screen I use. The took quite a while, but the spray booth has not been SO clean in years –

Ready to go for some painting action!

I couldn't stand having such a clean bench, so lets get started!

First up, the proverbial opening shot I personally like to show that gives you an overall idea of what all I will be starting with.

First up, is the basis for the whole build, the 1/32nd Hasegawa Fw 190 A-8 –

Next up, an overall shot of the quite substantial pile of AM I have accumulated for this build –

This includes but is not limited to:

- Eagle Parts amazing late Fw 190 A-8 cockpit

- Master Models Mk 108 brass canon barrels

Finally, the last piece of AM I have for this build is one of the coolest IMHO. I decided to display the Fw 190 in a vignette type setting, so I purchased a base to non-permanently display it on.

I picked up the Just Plane Stuff 1/32nd Luftwaffe plank hard stand –

This thing is pretty cool IMHO because although it looks like resin, its actually more akin to the expandable spray foam you would use out of the can to seal cracks, and to provide insulation. When you turn the base over, you can see just wee bit of what the foam looked like in a more raw state (which has not seemed to effect the display side) -

The detail on the base looks JUST like it was made out of resin, but is about 1/10th the weight. The casting on my copy is great, including great ground work detail, realistic looking edges where appropriate, and even great wood grain detail -

So I dove right in, starting with my usual place, the pit. The EP pit is a thing of beauty, and actually so far in dry fit tests, fits VERY well.

I started with a soak in Westleys Bleche Wite (Yes that is close to how you spell it) for all the resin cockpit parts, to remove any remaining mold release or grime -

Next up, it was time to cut the IP hood off of the OOB fuse parts per the EP instructions. I used Radus razor saw in an exacto handle and set about chopping the EP hood off its pour block, ad then used some Dymo tape to guide my cuts along the under hood panel line and removed the Hasegawa IP hood. This went surprisingly swimmingly, and the dry-fit to the EP hood is stellar -

Thanks Martin! ;)

As you can see, I also used a sanding bit and a speed reducer on my Dremel, and took the OOB Has fuselage interior pit side walls down to around .40 -

The FIT.............. of the PIT.............. is the shhhhhhh -

With just a VERY small amount of pressure with just one finger I can get the slightly flexed side walls to flush up to the Has side walls -

YAY!

Well folks, thats all for the first update on the new build. MUCH, much more to follow, as I'll be devoting quite a bit of time to the 190 this weekend with Fri, Sat, and Sun off.

Cheers till next time and thanks for looking in on me.

Thanks lads!

I also just figured out that I actually need want more AM. In this case I will replace the Aires resin 151 20 Mike-Mikes with a set of Master Model brass barrels -

Since the Eagle Parts cockpit comes with a seat with belts and one without, I picked up a set of nice HGW textile belts for the 190 -

Holy Cow! Looks like except for a few square inches of the 190's outside skin, not much of the Hasegawa kit is going to make the build. I shutter to think what the AM purchases added up to. I'm still buying more for my P-61 and the cost is bewildering.

Terrific start on fitting the cockpit and the necessary surgery.

Looking forward to following your progress and enjoying the build.

Keep 'em coming

Peter

I like this project very much, following with extreme interest. I have the same kit and thinking about which outfit I will be dressing her with. Glad to see those pictures of the real McCoy, weathering looks quite dirty, or dusty, the black paint aft the exhaust looks almost hidden along with std camouflage due to exhaust stains  :piliot:
