mhorina
Can the seam on the sliding canopy in the Tamiya P-51 kit be easily removed? Does anyone have any tips? I was surprice that there is no seam on this part in the Revell Early P-51 kit. TIA Mike Horina Edited April 18, 2018 by mhorina Gigant

mhorina
Tom, no I have no photos. But I do have 2 very clear,no seam Revell canopies. The seam on the Tamiya canopy runs in the middle of the canopy lenght wise. Very neat and uniform. I'm just supriced that its there. Especially since its not on the Revell canopy. Thanks for that Mike Maben Mike Edited April 18, 2018 by mhorina Gigant and MikeMaben
Gigant
OK, Mike I just got through posting my tried and proven technique for the benefit of all on this website: http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=74570 mhorina
mhorina
Thanks for that technique, Tom. But that is the manufactures seam while making that part. I was surpriced when I looked at the Revell part because there was no seam. I asked the question becauce I would of thaught Tamiya would not have done the canopy that way. The seam is very thin and not very thick. I was more worried about cracking the Tamiya part. But I quess I'll just try to be very careful Mike
modelingbob
The seam on the Tamiya canopy is from where the molds join together. It's very easy to remove (and yes, it should be removed). It's also found on most jet canopies from most manufacturers. And you're correct, the seam is present on the Tamiya canopy, but not the Revell canopy. That's probably about the only thing good about the Revell canopy!!! Edited April 18, 2018 by modelingbob MikeMaben
K5IKL
That's probably about the only thing good about the Revell canopy!!! If it's not broken in half when you get it....Right Bob?
modelingbob
Hey Jerry, at least I got an entire replacement kit for free from Tower Hobbies to replace my broken in half canopy before Tower went tango uniform, so I can't complain!!!!! As all friendly kidding aside, I noticed on the Revell USA customer support site that says : "Regrettably the Replacement Parts feature is not available at this time. Any requests not shipped by Friday, April 13, 2018, will unfortunately be cancelled. We hope to resume service as soon as possible." Hopefully Revell Germany will get something up for all of us USA folks soon so we can get replacement canopies. Dave Williams
The reason some bubble canopies have a seam down the middle is that they are true “bubble†canopies. Namely, they pinch in at the bottom, which can only be replicated by a multiparty mold because otherwise they wouldn't release from a normal 2 part mold. The Revell canopy not having a seam means that it's not a correct “bubble†canopy, while the Tamiya is, which is why it has the seam.
quang
The Revell canopy not having a seam means that it's not a correct “bubble†canopy, while the Tamiya is, which is why it has the seam. The canopy on the P-51D-5 – early production of the Mustang – was NOT a 'bubble' per se. Its sides were flat and not bulged like the later versions. That type of canopy was moulded, not blown like on the later versions. Revell got it right. Rick Griewski

Like you say, hopefully there will be a USA distributor soon that will be able to handle replacement parts. The DE site should work but it will obviously take longer. https://www.revell.de/en/service/service-form/model-building.html
williamj
Go to the drugstore and pick up several of these in the cosmetics department...polishing blocks for women's nails..get the fine. One side will gently sand off the seam, the other side (which is blue) will polish it up like glass...no fus,no muss. mhorina
William, Thank you for that. I have most of the products mention in this thread What I was hoping for was how the canopy would handle the buffing and such. I had a bad experience with canopies cracking while trying to clean them up.I have managed to get rid of the seam and have gotten it back to a shiny can opy with no seam. Thanks to all who helped get me through this problem. Mike Rick Griewski
