Alternatives to Alclad 2 ?

Hi all,

I'm about to start an F-4J and an F-15J.  I wanted to try alclad 2 for the first time on the exhaust, but its proving difficult (actually impossible) to find here in Calgary.

Are there any reasonable alternatives that i could get away with?  Or does anybody in Calgary know where i can get it?

Cheers,

Chris

Could you make it more readily available in Calgary???  :)

Thank you though, once i get it i'm sure the questions will be flowing.  I've read great things about it.  I can't wait to try it out

Cheers

There is always the Testors Metalizer line. There are a lot of shades to choose from, but they are delicate, not tough like alclad. Gunze has a similar product, called Mr. Metal color.

There are some other new ones on the market, but I have only seen them discussed on forums, and do not know much about them.

Gunze Super Metallics are fantastic and in my opinion spray better than Alclad.

I vote for Gunze too...the Alclad is too soft. Removing masks also removes the metal paint!

Not true. I've used Alclad's for years, masked on top with almost every build and have never once had a spec of Alclad lift or pull off. I've handled it with clean hands a few minutes after application and have never had any problems with fingerprints or marks. For me, no finer product for a NMF

Well... I am sorry,  I just saw what I wrote.

I used Gunze surfacer and Hansa low tack masking foil...and the glossy top layer went off. And I am not the only one to experience the problem.

e.g.  see here:

However, if applied over flat base primer, (E) and (G) will have little to no reflectance and masking tape will peel the ALCLAD II totally off the surface.

I'm not sure why others have had problems with Alclad lifting and peeling. I always prime with either Mr Surfacer 1000 or now with MiG Surface Primer and after letting the primer dry completely, follow up with a super smooth base coat of Tamiya Gloss Black. When dry (this is the only case I let Tamiya paints dry overnight) and then apply the Alclad, building up light layers. Normally I'll let the Alclad dry for no more then a half hour and mask on top with Tamiya tape that I de-tack very well.

There just shouldn't be any reason for the Alcald to lift when done this way. I always sand and polish the model surface from 320 - 12,000, so there are no imperfections to deal with.

I share the same experiance with Peter with them Alclads and masking.

never peel or colorlift from Alclad.

as mong as the inderneath coats are well dry amd cured i handle my models just 15-30 minutes after Alclad is on, its hot and dries real fast...and no finger print problems...if finger prins occut is due the fact that underlyiong primer/paint is not cured.

An excellent alternative to Alclads (which are great paints, though) is the new range of AK Xtreme Metal. They are as good as alclad, or even better. I found that the high shine ones are more resistant that Alcads ones (please note that i only talk about the high shine, the standard ones are all very resistant if applied correctly).

However, i dont know if they would be easier to get in Canada as they come from Spain. But i think they ship worldwide.
