F-86D Sabre Dog cockpit info needed

Hi guys,

 

Last Saturday, I obtained Kitty Hawks F-86D Sabre-Dog. Since it builds into a pretty large and impressive model I have some questions on cockpit details that will be pretty visible on the model. So if you know your Dog Sabres, please help!

 

  :please:

 

1. It seems that aiming and firing the rocket-armament was exclusively done through info presented on the radarscope? Didn't the aircraft have a back-up sight on top of the instrument panel/coaming?

 

2. Was the hood on the radar scope usually mounted on the scope or was it stowed some place and only fitted (in flight or before the flight) if conditions warranted it? The hood might often accidentally be knocked off by knees and legs of pilots entering or exiting the aircraft?

 

3. I'm looking for a/some photo(s) of the shelf behind the ejection seat under the open canopy. It features some black boxes and air/hydraulic reservoirs. I have a feeling that the Kitty Hawk depiction is a bit simplified.

1 : no back-up sight, there is nothing on the IP coaming.

2 : yes it was only mounted if needed. On most pictures (taken on the ground of course) it's not mounted.

3 : Not easy to find pictures of what's under the canopy behind the seat.

Affirmative, no back-up sight on D models. The Lima, however, had one.

 

F-86L with Sperry Mark 18 back-up sight:

Shroud:

The Kittyhawk kit comes without radar scope shroud. In general, the rubber shrouds were omitted later in the Sabre Dog's career.

The F-86D was subject to many modifications and upgrades, and one of the mods was the installation of a radar scope with significantly better display contrast.

As to the installation immediately aft of the seat, I'll have to do some digging. There's a pretty nice illustration in one of the F-86D's systems manuals.

Thanks Zero77! Very helpful! It's too bad one can't have a look under the canopy of the Dutch F-86K in the National Military Museum anymore. Not sure if the aircraft is on general display at the moment but at the last location of the museum, the canopy was closed and the slats were taped in the "up"-position. Furthermore the a/c is said to be a FIAT-built machine that was refinished in Dutch colors as opposed to the Original Dutch "Kaasjagers" that were North American-built.

The installation behind the seat rails could vary from one version to another.

 

Some versions of the Sabre Dog had the oxygen bottle mounted immediately aft of the seat rails perpendicular to the fuselage datum line (see Zero's post, second pic), others had the bottle installed on the left side parallel to the fuselage datum line.

Hey Typhoonattack, thank you for checking! I have two volumes of the Ginther book too, but since my middle name is -or should be- "Chaos", I can't locate them at the moment....  :rolleyes:

 

Erik, thanks for those pics!!! But how on earth am I going to replicate that polished effect while I have to use decals for the small stencilling....... I'm afraid mine will be looking a bit more oxidised as I have to use clear lacquer over the NMF....  :BANGHEAD2:
