Hasegawa F-104C Starfighter, Da Nang AB 1965

An oldie but a goodie, this is one of Hasegawa's earliest large scale jet offerings...released in 1978 as I recall. And I do remember well its appearance on the market, and in particular, its appearance under our Christmas tree that winter.

Thanks Santa!

I think I started building it that same day. Armed with Squadron Signal's "F-104 In Action" monograph (the first edition by Lou Drendel), I was intent on doing 57-0128, resplendent in full camouflage, as it appeared in 1966 while deployed to Ubon AB, the unit's second (and final) visit to Southeast Asia.

As a young teen back then, I was beginning to take the hobby seriously. I had an airbrush (a Binks Wren) and some good enamel paints (Pactra's Authentic International Colors). I even scratch built the IFR probe (only later editions of the kit supplied this).

Enough waxing nostalgic...my idea for the group build is to replicate 56-0886, another Charlie model Zipper, christened "Fannie," as it appeared during the 479th's first deployment to the theater in 1965.

As you can see from the accompanying photo, the aircraft were still (mostly) naked save for the nose and tail, and, of course, the wings, which, except for some prototype and test birds, were always painted; in this case insignia white on top, ADC gray on the bottom.

Despite my enthusiasm for the project, I won't commence work on it for several weeks. Other commitments (Intruder related) will occupy me through the end of this year, at least.

In the meantime, I'll be following everyone else's work!

Cheers and good luck to all,

Rich

Nice one, had a bit of a giggle at 'naked fannie'....that doesn't mean your backside in Australia lol :)

Yikes, I just googled the slang term in Australia. I honestly had no idea!

I've edited my original post so as to not to seem boorish to my friends down under, particularly the women. And Brad, I know you didn't take offense. Thanks, nonetheless, for bringing it to my attention :) .

It's quite enough that some politicians here in the states openly dispense these kinds of obscenities intentionally!

You need to start building this one soon lest the thread catch on in a rather different way than intended. The thought of a large zipper revealing a ...........

Nothing quite like missing in translation!

Cheers,

Mike

I know, I was thinking the same thing, lol...

...an inauspicious start for sure!

I'll at least post some pictures of the unassembled kit and some aftermarket items I intend to use, including a nice set of AIM-9B missiles from Eduard. These will go on the wing tip rails, as in the photo of the real deal. The plan is to also mount a pair of fuel tanks beneath the wings on those canted pylons that equipped A and C models.

This was a typical load out for the "Big Eye" EC-121D escort missions, one of its primary roles in SEA.

Cheers,

Rich
