Another Fokker Finished!

I Finally managed to get enough done to warrant some pics of my Fokker DVII OAW build. The cockpit assembly is almost done and I just need to add the bracing wires and control cables. I'm not quite sure yet what material I'm going to use for that. I bought some EZ Line but it's way too fine. The instrument housings have all been drilled out and backed with a small punched out styrene disc. The instrument decal was laid down and then another clear disc laid on top of that to represent the glass face. After that a PE bezel acquired from Peter at Airscale was laid over top and everything was secured with a drop of Future. The photo-etch seat belts were tossed with the exception of the lap buckles and Tamiya tape and some spare HGW buckles were used to make up the belts. The triangular buckles at the ends of the belts were cut off of the kit supplied belts and used as the HGW buckles were different. The HGW buckles I used were the ones that allowed the length of the belts to be adjusted. Geeez I hope that makes sense.....

Painting the cord that secured the fabric behind the seat to the frame work was an interesting challenge. Any small mistakes were carefully cleaned up with the tip of a #11 blade while the paint was till wet. Afterwards my usual wash of a 50/50% mix of black/brown detailer liquid was applied to highlight the cord colour. The seat back colour was custom mixed and once dry and clear coated was covered with Microscuplt decal material to represent the fabric texture. This stuff is designed for 1/48 scale but really works well for 1/32nd as well. The fabric material behind the seat was covered with the same decal material and the CDL material above the firewall was also covered with it. The tubular frame work was painted MM British Interior Green. I had originally thought of going with RLM 02 but based on pics on the Memorial Flight website I thought the British interior Green looked better. What do y'all think?

The floor, instrument panel and the wooden support for the compass was painted MM wood and then covered with a wood grain decal material that I picked up a few years ago. The cockpit floor was covered with light oak and the instrument panel with red oak. These were then sprayed with a very diluted 50/50% mix of Tamiya clear yellow and clear orange. The compass was cut from it's pintle so I could angle it correctly in relationship to the sit of the aircraft. Using a fine drill bit and fine wire I've managed to get the compass to move easily enough to adjust it's position.

Dry fitting is an absolute must with this kit to fully understand how it all goes together. For instance I found that the small pins at the bottom of the machine guns which fit in to the forward gun mounts were too big and made fitting the MGs problematic. Enlarging the holes in the mounts with a small dental bur (turning it by hand) solved the problem. Trying to do that later when it was time to actually fit the MGs would have been very difficult. I'm currently working the the engine mount assembly and the same holds true here. Figuring out how it all fits together is paramount as getting it wrong will even effect the fit of the forward cabane struts that the upper wing attaches to.

So far this is an amazing kit but a lot of care is needed to make sure it all goes together. When you've got it right, it fits like a dream.

On to the pics!

Cheers,

Wolf

I've been waiting for your opening salvo ... super start Buddy. The wood grain is over the top and the extra details are just stellar.

Keep 'em coming

Wolf, that paint work is just magical! So clear and crisp. Is the wood grain from decals or paint?

Kev

Thanks Kev,

Yes, the wood grain is decal. I use what I have if you know what I mean and I still haven't mastered using oils but I'll have to soon when I get to the prop!

Thanks so much Peter,

With yours and all the others working on their Fokker DVIIs, I have a great deal of inspiration.

Wolf

Wolf.. Is that the decal stuff from Uschi van der Rosten? I just got some in from Grant at Arrow Wolf today and can't wait to try it out if it looks that good. Also.. you didn't mention what color you used for the green on the tubing and interior stuff.. I like that shade a lot.

The interior looks amazing thus far

Actually I did mention the frame work colour, it's MM British Interior Green. The funny thing is that I was still typing and editing while I was getting hits on my post, LOL, so not everything was up yet. You're just a little too fast for me

I can't tell you where the wood grain decals I used came from. They happened to be at my not so local hobby shop and they had no logo or identity to tell where they came from. They are almost clear with the exception of the wood grain itself so they must have a wood coloured background before application. They're really nice to work with too and lay down over raised detail incredibly well.

Cheers,

Wolf

Wow, that paint work is awesome. Love it!

Thank-you Brian! Coming from a master such as your self, I take that as a very kind compliment. I hope my Fokker turns out as well as your DH. 2, I've just got A LOT LESS rigging, LOL!

That's what used in my builds as well. Those wood grain decals are great.

Is that the gun mount I sent you?

I need to figure out that detailer wash, I am not getting the same effect with it that you are. Yours is much nicer.

Very nice work Wolf,

Ron

Thanks Ron, that is indeed the gun mount you sent me although it's been modified a little.

I almost always mix my detailer washes 50/50 with black and brown, add some dish washing soap and thin well with distilled water. Sometimes I have to apply the wash a couple of times to get enough colour density. Once dry, a hair dryer works great by the way, any excess is cleaned away with water using a very fine paint brush.

Cheers,

Wolf
