Teknics 1:32 Lantirn AN/AAQ pod - issues?

I've been after the Lantirn for my Revell F-14B since the day the kit landed in the mailbox.

At first my only option appeared to be the Flightpath (?) set incl. the Lantirn pod. Or I could beg the Lantirn from s/one's F-15 kit.

Then I did a Goo-goo search for stuff in 1/32 and up pops an Evilbay OOP Teknics AN/AAQ.

Score.

What is/was the general opinion of this particular piece of kit? I'm aware that Teknics were/are still one of the big-hitters for resin.

Anyhoos, I managed to scare off another bidder and snaffled it for $40 (US$35) shipped.

I was all ready to let it go if a snipe bid cut me off, since Dr Pepper Resin also has the AN/AAQ pod as a standalone. It's cheaper AND has own decals.

I was simply chuffed winning the Teknics version, since OOP stocks normally go for silly prices. I can print my own decals anyhoos.

Thanks for any comments/opinions.

Regards

Cheers, Tony.

Yep, thought so. Soon as I pull the trigger on s/thing OOP I find it In Production . .  and half the price.

:-)

Still, I'll need a second pod anyhoos. (VF-211 'Alpha' is No 2 on the cards.) The WP looks the dog's avocados.

And has deckles! Funny thing, I've looked at that list more than once and didn't see the pod listing.

I don't believe a 1/32 LANTIRN is in production.  The Wolfpack stuff are later LITENING and SNIPER pods.  Isracast also made LITENING, but not LANTIRN.  If it's LANTIRN you need, the old Teknics is about the only aftermatket one that I remember.  As Don said, the last Tamiya F-14 boxing has two LANTIRN pods due to duplicate sprues.

Cheers, guys.

The Tamiya kit might be an option, if somebody wants to give it up.

I certainly am not in the market for Tamiya, however.

Meanwhile, Dr Pepper has the LANTIRN and LITENING II:

The LITENING description doesn't say so but I believe it's the AN/AAQ-33 so not suitable for the F-14.

Either/or, if I do spot another Teknics I will grab it.

Just realised that the Trumpeter F-14D Tomcat has a LANTIRN targeting pod included. Too many boxes of unmade kits!

Just a thought.

Hi Ross,

Probably need the pod even though I don't really want it. I'll explain. I'm doing - in a year or two - a VF-31 Tomcatters F-14D. Undecided as to stores; I would *like* to do it with *at least* a couple of Phoenix missiles (four ideally), but the farewell scheme is post-Phoenix in all likelihood, making a Bombcat configuration with the LANTIRN targeting pod a reluctant necessity for accuracy's sake.

Have Zacto inlets and am stashing more bits in preparation. What's your timetable? If you're not building for a couple of years it might go spare. Otherwise, was wondering if the pod is included in either the Trumpy F-14A or B releases and someone has a spare by now?

The LANTIRN pod in the Trumpeter kit is molded upside down. When the holes on “top†of the pod body mate with pins in the adapter pylon, the rear air scoop is on the wrong side as well as the angled part being inverted. The easy fix is to rotate the pod body 180 degrees, however you'll have to relocate the small round vent on the rear of the pod as it's now on the top instead of on the bottom as it should be (it was in the right place when the pod was upside down).

Thanks for the reminder Dave.

Having googled the subject, I can't get away with putting just A2A on my future build of Bandwagon 101 or another - it needs to have a LANTIRN targeting pod, i.e. the rearranged Trumpy one, and a solitary Phoenix will have to be relegated to "deck" item on an Aerobonus or Flightpath missile dolly cart.

Wondering if I do the OIF era one whether Phoenix would be remotely appropriate, even though the missiles remained in service until 2004 ?

Ross, let me know how you get along with the Teknich pod. By the sound of things, it's more accurate anyway!

P.S. Tomcatfanatic deals with the issue in post 5 of...
