What Ju Talkin' Bout, Willis? Completed 20/9/17

Hi Everyone,

Although I love fighters more than anything, I had to find out about the "new tool" Airfix.  Prior to this, the last Airfix kit I knew of came in a bag, and hung on a peg at the store.  And...they were a bright sky blue plastic.

I always wanted to do the smiling Stuka in the picture:

What color(s) would you call that bomb?

Thanks to NG Models I can:

It's a beautiful decal sheet.  Also, NG Models makes some nicer resin wheels to go with the kit.  Although the kit has the clever option of weighted or in-flight wheels, the tread patterns are rather balloon-ish looking.

I did some color modulation with the airbrush to give a slight sense of fading.  As I intend this to be a Sitkrieg bird, I'm not going to do much more weathering.

I tried modulation on the underside, too.  No idea how dirty I should make the belly.

So...seal it up...decals...  Pin wash...and matte coat to go.

Thanks for looking!

Hi Kev,

This kit is pretty brilliant though it has a couple inexplicable fails.  The surface detail is awesome on the wings and cowling though average for the rest of the fuselage.  The spats had a lot of sinkholes but only three on the fuselage.  Although the plane IRL had 4 canopy parts, Airfix has decided to make only three, joining the pilot's glass with the piece immediately behind in closed or open options.

It has some posing options:  Rudder anywhere, Elevators up or down, Flaps up or down, and wheels and spats either in landed or in-flight configurations.   For the open panel guys, you can have both engine and MG bays open...though opening the MG bays will require cutting holes in the upper wing.

Bomb - Looks like maybe a version of RLM 02?

I was thinking along the same lines.  But the tip?  White?  Buff?  and then is tail-cone and fins another color, or just in shadow?  Is it a practice bomb?  I like the black stripe in the middle.  Everyone knows that multicolored bombs do more damage.  Lol

Thank you, Kent.

There are a few references about German bombs.  And it all comes down to what bomb you want to portray.  Some were solid colored and some had colored (yellow, blue...etc) tail cones.  Some had yellow stripes on the fins.

Nice job on the Stuka so far!

What is the underside color you are using?

Also, were you actually looking for the bomb's colors as shown, or was that a rhetorical question?

I mean, the main color is bare, sand-blasted, unfinished, clean-for-paint-prep'd-steel...

Since they didn't finish painting it for the propaganda photo-op, I would guess it is unarmed also.

In either case, I wouldn't worry the bomb shown, and choose colors of my liking.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the kind words and the bomb appraisal. The paint on the underside is a home made RLM 65. Then in irregular patches I have sprayed a lightened version of the same color, then tinted that color with a bit of black to gray it and done more irregular and patchy spraying.

Mustang,

Thank you!  It's quite a nice kit, though I wish I'd have done the Tamiya B-2 just to compare.  The instruction booklet is excellent and it goes together easily.  The only fit issue is when you try to close-up the pilot's windscreen.

Gerhard,

I found the plastic a little soft, but not disturbingly so.

As you know, as I am not one for "Aircraft Bling-Bling", I wouldn't recommend turnbuckles for this one either, although there those who can't stand building a kit without them (the dreaded "Turnbuckle-Counters", a more recent species of kit-builder mutated from counting too many rivets as "Rivet-Counters") might differ.

Kidding aside, I would like to know, however, with all the control-surface and panel options, why doesn't yours "show-off" any of those newer tooling options?

Well, it is flaps down.   But I didn't see the point of not having the rudder and elevators away from neutral.  I found pictures with them landed with flaps down, but never noticed rudder or elevators in a non-neutral position.  And I prefer to build planes closed-up.  Especially with the decal options I've chosen.

I could have put the Jericho Trumpets on, too...  But any pictures I could find of StG 77 Stukas in France and later showed them capped.

So, between my own personal tastes and historical references, I ended up where it is.
