Azur 1/32 I-16 Type 10 'Rata'

I recently acquired this little gem of a kit from a fellow modeler here on LSP.  The wings have been and the fuselage was glued together.  I've since got things started on the interior and am adding some home-brewed PE and scrap parts to the cockpit.  It was missing the small PE fret so I'm coming up with my own gunsight and belts along with some other details.  So far it's a dandy little kit.  :piliot:

And starting the cockpit mods.

So far this one appears to go together well.  The starboard side wingroot, for some reason, has a step to it but the port side lines up perfect.  So I'm investigating that a bit.  Otherwise it's all come together fine.  And Alan did some nice work before I got it...super-clean seams on the wings!

Biggest hurdle so far was finding good info on the interior colors.  Took some hunting but I got it nailed down now.  Plans tonight are to get the bobs and bits glued in and lay down paint.

It's good, but don't go mad as nothing can be seen inside the cockpit once closed really. The issues are the under fuselage wing seam and then avoiding anhedral. IIRC the aircraft had flat dihedral. The fuselage is a bit wide when the cowling ring goes on, which pushes the top wing joint out wider and as the wheel bays are joined in the midline theres no give, so anhedral results. Sever the wheel bays in the midline.

Update from last night's efforts.  Just a few things added to get it looking a bit busier.  As close as I could get this using a few photos.  Paint to go on tonight.  You can also see the wing gaps I'll be fighting.  Otherwise it's not bad at all.  The cowling took a bit of the old 'glue and hold' method to get it right but again I'm happy with the results.

I just used leftover PE bits and some plastic sprue to get this all done.

Thanks for that tip, sir.  I took your advice and did just that last night.  Once I mocked it all back up the wing root gap is not significantly narrower.  It took about 20 minutes or so of time to cut, trim and clean out the plastic between the bays.  Thanks again!

I did get the interior painted and now just need to weather it a bit and get the belts installed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update...decals and PE showed up so I was able to complete the cockpit and get the whole thing glued together last night.  I used some sprue stock to beef up the instrument panel and floor panel mating areas as there is little to keep things in place.  I did the dihedral on the wings one at a time as it was a real pain to get the upper wing join to mate up properly without some fussing.  Since this I put some putty on a few spots and tonight will be cleaning those seams up.  If it all works out I hope to have paint on it this weekend.
