Tamiya Mosquito and Spitfire

Hi all

after building 2 trumpeter kits, i decided to try out and treat myself to Tamiya. I bought the spitfire and the mosquito was a birthday gift, and since both pretty much have the same colours i thought of a dual build. also, i would really try to do a camouflage aircraft. never tried it before and i've been building pretty much single colour tone aircrafts so far, except for the harrier with minor camo on the top and bottom. so here goes.......

i am following closely with 2 builds currently on line on the mosquito, namely the Wolf build ( http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=58664) and the Peter's build (http://forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?showtopic=63855&page=20 )  Both are superb examples for a step by step reference.

first up..... i could wait to try out the engines. so i skipped Tamiya's instruction and went straight to the engines.

unfortunately, i did not have any intentions of doing a WIP so , the build had advanced

i must say, everything came together very nicely on the Tamiya kit. everything fits. that is a welcome surprise to my previous builds

started to put in some details for the pipe works

finally, i think the engines are done

do anyone have good pictures and references to the Mosquito's firewall? dont seem to be able to find any on the net. Lots of pics on the spitfire , but not on the mosquito.

thanks

You picked two awesome Tamiya kits for sure and a wonderful start on the Merlins. I've built both of Tamiya's Spits and they are superb kits but being early in the line, there are a number of 'Toy Like" features you need to deal with that have been dropped by the time the Corsair was released and completed missing from the Mossie. I've found it very helpful to follow the instruction sequence and when there are alternate choices depending on which specific aircraft your are building (normally choices A,B or C)  to highlight the letter for each selection, as sometimes it is easy to do the wrong one (Don't ask me how I know). With the Mossie it is also very also very important to no only making sure you are using the correct parts for your specific aircraft but need to decided if the assemblies will be open or closed (bomb bays etc) and or up or down (flaps, etc). also import to tape and mark part assemblies: Left and Right; just way too easy to intermix them.

Looking forward to following your progress.

Keep 'em coming

Peter

Thank you Harv, and Peter, yeah, tell me about it? i totally messed up my build on the very first day. i wanted to build the spitfire's engines, but i was looking at the Mosquito's build guide, so i ended up ripping open the engine blocks to remove the magnets, etc. finally started to put each aircrafts part in different bin and put the 2 boxes with the parts one each end of my study room to ensure i dont cross pick parts. Yes, i think flagging the builds is the way to go and yes, the tamiya instructions are with the multiple choice thingy, so got to pay close attention to that too. i am still awestruck by your mosquito build. hope mine turns out the same. do you intend to buy aftermarket decals? i've read the tamiya decals are real thick, so i decided to buy aftermarket decals and also for the stencilling - from HGW - http://www.bnamodelworld.com/model-planes-paint-masks-stencils-hgw-models-hgw-232011

the original decals are way too thick and even cast a shadow on the edges. i bought both for the Mosquito and Spitfire.

the Firewall in the Engine compartment looks to be in interior green, rather than the Bare Steel quoted in the Tamiya Build reference? looked thru the net and it looks like only the restored ones are in bare steel

Shan, you look to be correct, If I knew how to post a photo from my computer files, I could sow you an un-restored firewall from RS700  CF-HMS that I am helping restore, and the engine side is green and the back side seems to be natural metal.......Although RS700 is a B 35, I'm sure it is the same, as the MkVI, it is this reference that I'm going to use for my build..

Nicely done.  Love those corrugated pipes.  What did you use?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mark

Hi, Mark, I used Guitar Strings. just looked around my stuff and found the closet thing that resembles pics of the mosquito engines

thanks Jeff, i think you may be right, i've been looking thru some pics and they seem to suggest that within the engine compartment they are interior green and bare metal at the wheel bays. Thanks
