To add a little history to this well known pic.If I remember correctly this was a tank from either the first or 4th company of the 12SS PzRegt that met it's end at the hands of well prepared Canadians ensconced in Bretteville on the Caen-Bayeux highway. The night attack ended in 7 out of 22 tanks being knocked out rapidly with the infantry riding on top of the engine decks suffering just as badly. They were the 15/25 SS PzGrenRegt recon company. The I/26 PzGrenRegt attacked on foot as well. Accompaning the attack on motorcycles were Max Wunche and PanzerMayer,who had told their young soldiers that they would go along on their first attack and then kept their word.

This failure taught those involved that the Canadians were a whole different story than the Russians as this kind of fast moving night attack right into the middle of the enemy had worked well many time in Russia for the LSSAH,where both leaders had been transferred from. The opening of the assault(as in russia) was with the lead tanks firing into buildings so as to set them on fire and light the battlefield but the inexperienced company commander sent his tanks between the lit buildings and the canadians,backlighting them and making them perfect targets.

There is a well known sequence of pics showing the remnants of the assault units licking their wounds back in Rots,with Wunche wounded in the head from a piece of shrapnel from a glancing round off one of this tanks.

This failed attack was followed the next day at around noon by the 3/12SS PzRegt attacking Noerry,to the southwest of Bretteville unsupported by infantry. When the tanks,moving at max speed,got close to Norrey,7 out of 12 were knocked out in rapid succession and most of those crews were lost as all of the tanks were totaled and "burned out". All of the survivors of the knocked out tanks had burns. Their leather u boat clothing protected them but their hands and faces suffered. The mechanics rubbed motor oil on the wounds as they had learned in Russian that this was a good,field expediant first aid technique.

This tank was pushed off the road by bull dozers to clear the way and turned over that way. A lot of the wrecks from this attack were used for target practice by the Canadians and appear like seaves in later pix.
