WNW Tripe

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Next up for me is the WNW Sopwith Triplane - quite a change from the Roland, as there is lots of CDL surface and wood framing to replicate.

I started with a coat of Tamiya buff lightened with flat white.

To give the CDL sidewalls a bit of depth, I next lightened the centers of all the stringer panels with light overspray of a highly thinned cream color.

Next some masking (several hours of masking!) ....

.... and then red brown sprayed through a RB Productions wood grain stencil followed by an overspray of 50/50 Tamiya clear orange and clear yellow.

I also worked up the interior framing using the same sequence and colors as the sidewall stringers.

Here are the two pieces together.

That's what I got this morning. Thanks for looking and everyone keep up the good work.

Dave

PS. I promise no more cat hair in my photos - ever (dang cat!).

Wow! What a great start. Triplanes are such fascinating subjects--they pack a lot of complexity into a very small footprint. I've always been intimidated by triplanes, no matter what the scale! I'm looking forward to how WNW pulls together their rendition.

Hi All,

Thanks for the comments. Dwight, I have amassed a number of the WNW kits and the Tripe is one of the simplest. It should be a relatively fast, easy build. Now that said, there is more rigging on the inside than the outside - every bay created by the fuselage frame is cross rigged with steel wire, except for those occupied by the pilot. Being a glutton for punishment, I am rigging each. I will post more photos this weekend.

As always, thanks for looking and everyone keep building.

Hi All,

I have a short build update this morning. I have been wading through the fine details of the cockpit and fuselage interior. First, I gave everything a burnt umber filter and then defined the fuselage stringers with a thicker wash of the same.

I have also spent a bit of time rigging all the wire cross braces. I am using .12 mm monofilament fishing line and .5 mm brass tubing (from Bob's Buckles) to rig the braces. This part of the build has been a puzzle to figure out. As I will show in my next post, rigging the floor braces and the rudder control lines will require all the lines to be in place before the sidewall framing and floor are glued together - I expect this to be quite the adventure. Anyway, here is a picture of some cross bracing in place.

Finally, here are the two parts dry fit together:

That's all for today. I'm off to watch the FA Cup final.

Everyone keep up the good work.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for the encouraging words. Dwight, Bob's precut tubing in great. I do make my own eyelets though. I sourced the wire from Nordland Models, yet another great vendor and they have a comprehensive catalogue of WWI aviation stuff. Anyhow, I twist up my eyelets around the shaft of a broken #78 drill bit held in a fly tying vice.

Absolutely beautiful work Dave! I love the way you've tackled the wood graining effect. What a lot of work but it shows how much effort you've put in by keeping your work very crisp and clean. I'm looking forward to seein' more.

Cheers,

Wolf

Hi All,

I have been slogging away at the cockpit interior. Here are a couple of pictures of my progress thus far. The first shows the cockpit floor and seat. The rudder bar has been rigged, but is pulled up beneath the seat. This is to facilitate the rigging of the floor cross braces. The second picture displays the mess of rigging that I have been sorting thorough. Since there is almost no clearance between the floor rigging eyelets and the floor, I decided to first thread everything together and then glue the sidewall framing to the floor. Once the glue sets, I will pull everything tight using the yellow plastic rings (sliced ear bud tubing) and hopefully have a fully rigged cockpit interior.

Ok, that's what I got today, hope all have a good Monday.

Hi All,

Interior is almost finished. I find it amazing all the little blemishes that show up in my photos - so, a few small touch ups and then I an going to figure out how to shoehorn this thing into the fuselage.
