Revell Hawker Hunter - Swiss J-4013

Well, John has shamed me into starting my next project.  I thought it had been a month since I started reviewing the kit, its instructions, parts and aftermarket.  It was actually June of last year.  Oh, well!  Those who have followed my projects here know I don't work quickly.  Sorry. But I hope you will follow along and give me the benefit of your experience and advice.

Here it is (DRUMROLL, please!):

There are photos of aircraft that grab one's attention and demand that one build a kit replica. This is one of my favorites. J-4013 was evidently a test bed for Swiss Hunters. I debated doing the orange and yellow as pristine or in its faded condition as in the photo. We have an USN aviator in our club and he said, "That's not yellow! That's faded orange. You HAVE to do it as faded orange gone to yellow! That orange faded the minute it was painted onto any aircraft." I agreed to do it and he exclaimed, "ALL RIGGGHHHTTT!!!"

What was the line in "Spartacus"? "We who are about to humiliate ourselves salute you!"? Or something like that.   :hmmm:

I'm using the Revell FGA.9/MK.58 Swiss version, the KMC resin cockpit set (Excellent!!!) and the Master Pitot tube which needs straightening.  I debated using Flightpath's massive PE set.  I think I will save it for a Royal Navy Hunter.  I say that because my review of this kit and its parts leads me to believe I'll build at least one more.

Hi great kit and a great looking subject - I built one a couple of years ago …. the kit can chuck you some fast balls in some of the areas but in general goes together really well. Funny my Model masters pitot was bent as well you'd think they would give it a bit more protection in the packaging! :hmmm:

Really looking forward to the finish should look funky in those colours!

Taff :D

Movies always get it wrong. The phrase is known from a gladiatorial naval battle during the reign of Claudius. Many years after Spartacus. "Hail Caesar, we who are about to die salute you" is a close translation of "Ave Imperator, morituri te salutant."

There was no Imperator during the time of Spartacus. Rome was still a republic.

Sorry. Roman history geek. ;)

Looking forward to this build.  :goodjob:

Where were you in 9th grade when I needed a good Latin tutor?    :)

This is an amazing kit! The quality of the molding is excellent. How many kits offer a true spoked wheel? Even the tiny hot air vent is molded into the sides of the fuselage. The flash suppressors on the guns are adequately represented.

All the subtle differences in the Swiss version are well represented and presented as extra parts.

Intake boundary layer dumps.  Very fine molding allows one to sand the underside of the wing and open the vents. A simple piece of scrap plastic (added later) reproduces the vent cover.

The KMC resin cockpit is excellent. I painted the base black coat with an old can of household spray paint I found in the basement. It was great. Point, spray, replace cap - DONE! It went on very heavy and I thought I'd screwed up but it dried perfectly.

I painted the seat with the base black, then Alclad 106 (dark aluminum) and then painted the belts, etc. I picked out some detail in the tub, side consoles and other pieces. Although I know the interior is supposed to be black and almost invisible (except for Swiss jump seats that are NMF) I couldn't stand the thought of that beautiful resin going unnoticed. Out of frustration I made a light pass over the parts with some Alclad 106 and the effect was very nice. Probably can't notice in the photos but the highlights are much to my satisfaction.

I still have to add the ejection handles.

Do you like decals? 287 of them and one starts applying them in Step 1. Not all are for the Swiss version. Many are for the RAF versions. And some are so small as to be almost useless. Some I scratch my head over because they are mostly black and go on a black painted part. Go figure!

I'm looking forward to seeing how the faded fluorescent orange turns out.  There are some RAF aircraft I'd like to do with that kind of scheme - but not until I know how to fade fluoro colours!

The kit goes together very nicely and won me a second place at Wales and West Group Air Cadet Field Day when I was around 16-17 I think.  I missed out on first place because I did the correct version of the box top colour scheme (the rule was to make the colour scheme on the box top and the markings are not quite right for this particular aircraft).  I took my references and showed them but to no avail...a guy who painted the camouflage in the wrong colours, but could't tell me what make paint he'd used won instead, strangely from the area the IPMS judges came from....I'd still rather be right than first!

I got there by winning Staffordshire Wing Modelling Competition with the 1/32nd Revell 31sqn Tornado.  Just so happened that one of the officers who turned up to look at the competition was JENGO on 31 when they put that scheme on.  That was a nice chat! Sorry, I digress...

As explained to me, the fluorescent orange begins fading almost as fast as it is applied. Direct sunlight causes the worst fading with less fading the less the area receives direct sunlight. If one blows up the photo I have above one can see this especially if one concentrates on the nose and underwing stores. There are other photos of this aircraft where it is noticeable but most of those photos do not show J-4013 in the configuration above.

And I look forward to seeing how you achieve this effect!
