I don't know, but I doubt that from a maintenance standpoint they were continually removing and reinstalling the stubs on an as needed basis.

Just my take.  Best of luck finding the answer.

Sincerely,

Mark

I'd tend to agree, Mark.

Useless speculation on my part, but since the battle for Iwo Jima was so fierce and the need to attack an entrenched enemy required new methods I'm thinking it is highly likely that something like rockets were tried on some 'Stangs just for Iwo Jima.  You know, the flyboys didn't want the Marines getting all the glory.  ;-)

2,400 EMERGENCY B-29 landings?  That is a lot of emergencies!  VERY cool read, thanks for sharing!

Here we go:  Of those 1 8 missions, only six were escorts. The others were strike sorties which largely involved shooting up enemy airfields, sometimes with five-inch High Velocity Aerial Rockets. Six HVARs added over 700 pounds to takeoff weight — something not appreciated by the pilots, but they packed a tremendous punch, particularly against shipping and reinforced buildings.
