Revell 1/32 Spitfire Mk.IIa kit - Built as a 54 Sqn Spitfire Mk.Ia.

Hello All,

As promised, here are the first instalments of my own thoughts on the new Revell 1/32 Spitfire IIa kit. Following in the sure footsteps of Iain Ogilvie and Jenn Wright, this will be very much my own opinion of the kit as I wanted to personally find out for myself what all of the fuss was about and was therefore determined to buy a kit ASAP in order to do this review.

Apart from giving the kit a 'once over', the other reason for this assessment and review was to do something that all of the members here have been asking - tell them if there are any anomalies, and more importantly, how to actually fix them!

First impressions on opening the box

My kit came in just a fraction under £20.00 to buy. The plastic is a soft pale green-gray colour and there appears to to be in excess of 180 individual parts in the kit. My immediate first impression is that this kit has a good level of detail and number of parts for the cost, making it very good value for money indeed.

Looking at the kit parts, the current trend for rivet markings represented by small hollows is very evident. This is not overly done - not as finely executed as on the Tamiya Spitfire kit, but better than the Trumpeter or Hobby Boss kits - and will easily be lost under a fine coat of filler or layers of paint. The detail parts look simplified, but generally accurate in shape and the cockpit is surprisingly well appointed when compared to many of the more well established and elderly Spitfire kits in this scale. The decal sheet looks like it is high quality and should bed down well on the kit and look good.

Looking forward to your review with great interest, as the new Revell Spitfire, sits patiently waiting in the model room.

Ha, I was expecting a bit more from Episode One!  I've got it now too, and have made first superficial comparisons to other 32nd Spit kits, but haven't had time for more thorough investigation.  Looking forward to more...

I thought the same thing after watching Stars Wars as well Bob...

It takes time to measure, photograph, compare, research and where necessary, create illustrations, and this is something that I have in very short supply, so please bare with me on this (I have a very full and long day tomorrow working on the LPG EE Lightnings at Bruntingthorpe and then I will be away on business next week as part of my daytime job, but I shall try to keep things moving along when I can).

I have already discovered what might be a very effective (and very simple) way of correcting the major kit issues, but you will all have to wait and see what I did!

Cheers

Peter ...

... And please tell me the flowchart for this cunning plan does NOT run like ...

Revell Spit IIa --> Round Filing Cabinet --> Set of 1/32 Scale drawings --> Styrene, brass and other associated bits-n-bobs --> A fully scratch-built Spit IIa ...

;) ;)

Apologies for no update - I have only just got back from Bruntingthorpe after a long and hard day working on a couple of EE Lightnings with the LPG. I am still photographing and comparing. Once I have the details straight in my head then I shall post part 2.

I will also need to do my homework to show how to modify the kit to look like a BoB Mk.1 Spitfire. As for a clue to how I have corrected the noticeable errors, it requires digits? (I am not going to make it too easy for you).

Cheers
