What base color under German WWI lozenge decals?

If they are my Aviattic decals the yes, gloss white - but other manufacturers products may not be translucent so it wouldn't matter.

For all decals use a gloss base (and if you have the patience, a polish) - it helps avoid silvering.

best wishes, Richard

(personally I like to go commando whilst decalling...)

Thanks all! Gloss white, or something close to white, was what I was thinking of using, so good to know I was on the right track.

I like to use a color that is common to the lozenge scheme, so that if there is any tiny area that ends up exposed without decal, it doesn't jump out as some weird color that doesn't fit into the scheme.

The yellow color in the upper scheme works well.

More than color, as others pointed out, having a smooth gloss finish for adhesion is the important thing.
