thierry laurent Posted March 16, 2018 Share Posted March 16, 2018 Hi guys, I found a second hand but brand new box of the floatplane for a so interesting price I decided to get one. I already got the Arawasi book some time ago. So it looked appropriate to finally find the kit. I am remembering a late good friend of mine built a beautiful kit of the K5Y2 a long time ago. He just used old modelling techniques to improve somewhat the kit. However, as we are now twenty years later, can you confirm no aftermarket set has ever been released for this oldie but goodie kit? I have difficulties to understand why some kits that look like having been available forever are completely forgotten by aftermarket producers whereas they release sets to replace totally acceptable parts in recent kits...! Of course I may at least rely on generic Japanese instruments decals and seat belts but I was thinking about a photoetched set or something similar for the IPs, the radios and so on. I figure that some odd bits, old fashioned scratch work, and careful painting will have to do. Perhaps some scavenged parts from a Nate or Claude PE set will yield some period parts. I guess this is probably linked to the scarcity of the documentation about the plane. :-( Oh, well, nothing an old modeller cannot solve! This just means a more time-consuming process...! Zero77 Posted March 16, 2018 Share Posted March 16, 2018 (edited) I think the book you already own (i have it too, and it's very good !) is the only aftermarket you can have about this aircraft, except some IJN seatbelts from Radu. May the scratchbuilding be with you. Those Doyusha kits look pretty good in shape and quality. I cant tell for the fit as i have not built one yet, though. What they lack most is cockpit details in my opinion but it should not be too difficult with some plastic profiles, pieces of PE and a few wires. There are some very nice schemes to do with this aircraft. I love the profiles in the book. I want to make the orange one with green blotches. One other interesting thing I found on the web that is not in the book is pictures of the plane preserved in Djakarta when the interior was not yet dismantled.
