LSP_Kevin
Well folks, with the modelling momentum in full swing at the moment, I thought I'd start a new long-term build thread. I'm going to be taking Hasegawa's old-tool Fw 190A/F kit (ST-6 specifically) and attempting to convert it to 190S configuration. For those who don't know what that means, it's the 2-seat training version of the 190, with an extended rear cockpit and canopy (check this photo on Wikipedia for a visual). Anyway, the kit needs a lot of help even if I weren't converting it, so out will come the styrene sheet and scribing tools. As such, this will be another long-haul build. I haven't even started the research yet! But I figured I'd start canvassing you guys for advice and references. I've never built this kit before, so I really don't know what's in store. Oh, and before I get any further, does anyone have a spare UMI conversion they'd like to part with for cheap? OK, all I have at the moment is a shot of the box: Here we go again... spacewolf
Hey Kev.. you don't do the easy ones do you ?... that's gonna look so cool ! From what I understand it's a reasonably accurate kit to start with, just needs some 'love' to be up to par. Cheers Vaughn
LSP_Matt
I think the UMI resin conversion is for an A5/A8 new tool kit Kev. It'd be great if Sergey from Vector did a BMW801 engine for the new tool kits. The one in that boxing is missing an awful lot. Still...better than nothin. LSP_Kevin
Cool, Here are a few photos I took of the one in Hendon for ya. Save them and I'll delete this post in a week so it doesn't mess up your build thread Cheers Ron Thanks Ron! Duly saved. I notice that there's a very prominent raised seam around the rear cockpit extension. I wonder if that's typical of all of them, or atypical to Hendon's example? Cheers Matty Ah, you're probably right about the conversion Matty. The reason I picked this old-tool kit is because, well, it's all I've got! Plus, I figured rather than just build a straight short-nosed 190 out of it, when the new-tool kits are clearly a better option for that, it'd be fun to do something a little different with this one. As for the engine, I'd imagine you could almost get away with not installing one at all, as I can't imagine you'd see much of it. Kev
Glenn R
Hi Kevin, You have beaten me to it, I'm going to do the same conversion to the same kit! PM me with your e-mail address, as I have some drawings you might find useful. Regards, Glenn.

Thanks for the offer of help too, as I'll need all the help I can get! I kinda wish I'd come in second on this one, as I'd much rather follow your lead than the other way around! I need to do a lot of research at this stage too Ron, but I think you're right about it being mostly a field mod. I suspect that the airframes they were based on varied widely too, so I'll have to hit the books and find out what I can. Kev
branchline
Hi Kevin, What a great idea, I've had one of these older kits for a while and then obtained the later release so was wondering what to do with the early bird. This will be an interesting project to watch. Cheers Brent

dennismcc
Boy do I remember that kit, it certainly needs some TLC ! I finished building it just before the new tool came out, challenging it certainly is. Cheers Den
JamesHatch
The 190S is something I've wanted to do for ages. Couldn't find the resin conversion kit though
Cymru am Byth
Hi Kevin I have two of Dave's conversion, both a little bit warped unfortunately! Would like to see someone do justice to at least one of them! I'll try and get some pics tomorrow or the day after. Regarding the fillet down the side of the cockpit, I think this was common to all as far as I have seen. A taster for now.......
