LSP_Ron
I thought I would share some pics of another hobby of mine outside LSP's and real cars. This has been my all time longest project on anything including my marriage! I started this build in 1994 and it's still not 100% finished. It's double plank on frame construction. The kit is by Panart. Fun to build but time consuming. This is my 2nd of three ships I've been working on in the last 15 years. Hope you like Ron Edited December 18, 2010 by ron
mattlow
Beautiful work there Ron. I have great respect for anyone working with wooden ships, even if its a kit of parts, I don't suppose the material is as forgiving as plastic (can't just fill any mistakes and blat some primer on). How large/what scale is she? Matt
LSP_Ron
Thanks Matt, Yes wood is much more difficult to work with. A bunch of different sized sticks that need to be made into a ship. A lot of bending, carving and sanding to be dealt with. The kit is 1:47 scale and is 32" (830mm)long Cheers Ron Edited December 18, 2010 by ron
JamesHatch
Bloody fantastic. I built this model too. I own the site Model Ship World, and I've seen some great renditions of this model, but yours is one of the best! This is mine:

LSP_Ron
Thanks for the nice comments all. I don't know James, I think yours looks a lot better than mine! The thing that really intrigues me with wood ship modeling is the fact that it's likely the oldest form of modeling. Scale model ships have been built as far back as the days of the Pharaohs. A few years back I toured the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. The models there are jaw dropping and even more so when you realize many of them are 100-300+ years old yet just as accurate and detailed as ones built today..... Youngtiger1
Ron, that is awesome. I would love to know how to build such cool ship models. It's like a whole new language for me. Very nice work and thanks for sharing it with us. Mike
Hubert Boillot
Great build of a great model Ron. There is an unmistakable air to wooden sailing ships models...Now, given the time I procrastinate on plastic bits, finishing a wooden kit is just a retirement project ! Well done ! Hubert. LSP_K2
You know, the more I look at this, the more I like it. Great looking ship Ron.
LSP_Ron
Thanks for the kind comments all Mike, if you start with an easy schooner or bark with a shallow bow and square stern you'll end up with a nice kit that you won't be frustrated with building. The Corel Flying Fish or some of the offerings Artesania Latina are great starters. You don't need any special tools outside of what we used for plastic LSP's with these kits. Give it a go, they are quite fun. The only draw back with them is that you almost need two hobby rooms. Wood ships make a lot of wood dust which doens't mix well with plastic airplane building! I still have the Corel Bellona to finish. I have the hull half planked but it's been on hold for about three years now but I am starting to get the bug again and will likely try to complete the hull this year. Here is what it looks like. ladder4boy
absolutely GORGEOUS work there Ron! I've been tempted to do one of these one day.. Wanted to do Panart's HMS Victory in 1:78.. Do these kits come complete with rigging, blocks, etc..? for the price, they seem like they should! Absolutely beautiful job on the Caroline. Jerry Thanks, Yes, most kits come complete. The only exception that I know of are Billings kits which tend to be horrible kits anyway.
