Hawk T Mk 1 ETPS - FINISHED, COMPLET, FINITO ...

Recommended Posts

This will be a Hawk T1, which in my opinion ranks alongside the Avro 504, Tiger Moth, Chipmunk, T-6 and Stearman as one of the all-time classic training types.  As well as being my tribute to Captain Eric Brown, I'll be paying my respects to his profession and all who follow it, by doing one of the three Hawks used by the Empire Test Pilots School.  I do happen to like the "Raspberry Ripple" scheme as well, so it's a win all round.

Or almost: ideally I'd have used the "standard" Revell 1:32 Hawk, but the kit I have is the Red Arrows boxing, and so has bright red plastic.  Well it was cheap!  So it's going to be an exercise in painting as much as anything.  Until I get the primer on, I suggest sunglasses when viewing. :coolio:

I'll post the sprue shots later when Photobucket decides to co-operate. :BANGHEAD2:

Yeh red plastic is bad, I'm building a 1/28 Revell DR1 at the moment, but it's not as bad as the bright orange plastic that some kits have! That stuff is terrible to work with.

Just for interest, here's a pic of the subject, and the scheme I'll be doing it in:

Also here a pic of the aircraft in the later scheme - I'll probably be doing the original scheme, the decals provide both options  - 8th pic down, but the others are rather interesting as well

Not much progress on the Hawk - I've assembled the wings with the main u/c bay, and made a start on the cockpit.  Just been waiting for these to arrive, so I can see how they fit, and plan the build accordingly.  The good news is that a quick dry-run shows a good fit - a bit of cleaning up has been done, but some still needed.  The not-so-good news is that I took a bit too much out of one intake lip when cleaning off the casting blocks.  :oops:  Superglue will be needed to fix it - I don't like superglue and it doesn't like me!

Mike,

AWESOME choice...Watching with interest.

{ how do you manage to paint white  on red sprues? }

I quite like that scheme you have chosen. :m0152:

Thanks Maru.  Re your question, tbh I've been wondering that myself

Maybe use a light grey or white primer? The Tamiya Fine Surface Primer is quite opaque.

Where did you get the intakes? I'd be interested in getting a set.

I was thinking that way myself Carl - grey primer (as you say, Tamiya, my primer of choice) to cover the red, then take it from there.

Re the aftermarket, Kits for Cash here in the UK used to call themselves Heritage, and they're their own product.  Go the "Heritage Conversions" on the left here http://www.kitsforcash.com/    and be quick, they are stopping production of these (see the "latest news" link and scroll down a bit) apparently there aren't that many left. (Edit: if the link doesn't work, you need to make sure the address bar doesn't have any odd characters after ".com", ie "www.kitsforcash.com".)

Thanks for the link Mike! I've ordered a set for my kit along with some ejection seats.
