Seriously Airfix? It's 2017 for God's sake. It's not like the design specifications for the US national insignia aren't available with a five second Google search. Sheesh. The B-17G is a nice kit, but when I see boneheaded stuff like this, it makes me wonder how accurate the rest of the kit is. There's simply no excuse for this. The red outline is the correct proportions and size for the B-17 wing insignia. No excuse.

The Airfix B-17s are apparently quite accurate

Do you actually have any positive opinions about scale modelling, at all....?

I found that out here. I then placed a post it note on the sprue bag to keep me from embarrassing myself later.

I probably would. It's 1/72nd scale, after all. Only problem is that I would never build a 1/72 kit. 😁

In progress: 1/32 Trumpy P-38L (very slowly)

On deck: Not certain.

Completed in 2015: Hasegawa F6F-3 Hellcat, Hase Me-163 Jagerfaust , 1/16 Fokker DVII Scratchbuilt Wooden Skeleton

More often than not I use the kit decals unless I'm looking to do a specific subject.  Even then I usually use a mix.  Our hobby is caught in a mix of old and new technology.  3D Printing is here, but the cost of molds is still probably very high to reach the state of the art.  Decal printing is still more of an art than a science (thank you Zotz and Eagle Cal!) but overall the kits are much better than even 10 years ago.

Which makes the errors like Jennings found in the Airfix kit kind of inexcusable.  On the other hand, I probably would not have even noticed!

The point being that a company will put X into getting a kit right, and then just drop the ball on what might ostensibly be one of the easier aspects of bringing a kit to market. They either don't care, or have poor quality control.

in progress:

 1/32 Hase Me-109G2/R6
1/35 Su-85/ winter- attach to base
1/32 DH-9a USMC- Delivered to Flying Leathernecks Museum, MCAS Miramar
1/32 Mig-3:winter paint and weathering: in progress and base
Yacht America need some parts.

I'm so far behind, I think I'm in first place...
Yes, I built models when I was a kid too.... no they're not toys....
