F-4B/J MER angle

Great find Jari!

I wondered how they accomplished the clearance to the gear doors as the USN outboard pylon is the same pylon used for the wing tank but with the adapter.

The pylons are hung at the same angle as for the tanks.

The USAF outboard Weapons pylon had the angle set by the mounting of the pylons to the wings. The USAF MERs were configured no differently for the OB Pylons than the CL Pylon.

This makes the new MERs from Eduard not wrong but not for use on the outboard pylons on USN & USMC Phantoms. That is if you're looking for accuracy!

Jari,

I forgot about the early use of the USN style pylons on the F-4C. But they did not use the Navy configuration on the MERs to angle them as I recall. That is why there are no bombs on the inboard side of the MER. This was necessary because of the bulged gear doors on USAF Phantoms needed to accommodate the larger wheel/tire.

Learn something new all the time! :)

Barry, if you look at the MER on the o/b pylon you can see that it is angled, check the bottom rack of the MER, while the pylon is vertical. Of course this only applied to the early F-4Cs and i've been learning new stuff almost daily.
