2003 series Cylon Raider

Another move, another city... but good friends and plastic never change. I blame this build on a friend who happened on an on line sale and this kit was part of it. He got it for me at a good price so how could I say no ?

The re imagined series of BSG had it's lovers and haters.... personally I found it very good and the ships were awesome ! The Viper, Galactica, Viper MK VII were great kits by Moebius, the Cylon droid had issues, Colonial One was pretty good and the Raptor is still in limbo as we speak.

When I heard they were doing the Raider I was pumped... really liked what they did with it in the show... but the first shots of the kit on line killed any desire for it.... a 4 season show..they changed the ship in the 4th season and which version do they bring out ?.. season 4 !

So... years on My buddy comes up with the kit and with time on my hands I figure... ok.. lets see what we can do to retro fit this into the season 1-3 version. It will have lights of course !

So stand by kids... this is gonna get messy !! :fight:

The ship was CGI for most situations, a 'hero' version was build for certain shots and the two differed in detail to a certain extent, It was envisioned as a three engine attack craft ... an organic organism with a metal ship around it.

The CGI version..

The hero full sized prop engine setup...

And the 2 engine season 4 kit by Moebius.... a leaner/ meaner looking version I guess..

I'm going with the CGI version for my build.

I found many amazing shots of the ship done by Zoic and Eric Chu on Modelers, miniatures and magic, Kurt Kuhns wonderful site. Using that as a starting point I began seeing that I have some work to do...

Aside from having to build three engines I'm going to have to build up an entirely new belly/ engine cover and weapons cover, rework the head and bulges on top of the wing.... think of it as correcting every mistake on the worst of the 60's Revell 1/32 scale fighters !

Every panel line is wrong... will have to be filled and the wing rescribed...

The only thing that's right is the basic shape of the wing...

But... you all know I love a challenge... so... we will see how this goes.

More in a few days.

Nice project Vaughan! I have the Black Sun version in 1/72. It's small and simple.

Howling Wolf make the season 1-3 Raider but it's resin and 1/24 scale.

Can't wait to see more.

Carl

Thanks ! I had the Howling Wolf kit... it got destroyed years ago in a move... still have the engines and missiles from it... a beautiful kit it was ! I'm hoping I can make this kit look as good as his... too bad he's passed on.. an amazing and passionate modeler.

Cheers

So... here we go.. got some new to me glue and a fancy applicator. To fill the panel lines I'm using stretched sprue from the kit and strips of  plastic cut from sheet

Stretched sprue glued in..

and sanded flush..

The louvered opening had to be filled with sheet... to get the shape I used the old 'trace the penny' rubbing technique....

The recessed opening between the wing and inner body has been filled as well.... Lots of sanding to do !!

That's it for now, more soon !!

Vaughn, loving watching you at work again. Super stuff mate, keep it going - very inventive work on the louvre pattern, but then it's hardly worth bringing up something like that for a bloke who can scratch build a whole space fighter! Well done.

Jim

Thanks much !! It's great to be back building. This ship is going to be just one thing after another, changing details and the bonus of scratchbuilding parts for it.

Cheers
