"What a piece of junk!"- Fine Molds 1/144 Millennium Falco

So here's one out of the stash. It's not the new Bandai release that everyone (well, Star Wars fans) have been clamouring over but I have it. I figure this will make a decent trial run for when I get to the 1/72 one in the stash.

There's not a lot of parts in the kit surprisingly:

One of the update sets I have is for the grills on the rear of the upper hull. You have to remove the existing detail first which I did using a r/c body reaming tool. Here's the first one done:

And with all of them reamed out.

I then installed the resin replacements from beneath. After painting, you add some PE grills over top.

1/144?  I though the real one was about 18 inches long.... I'd say it's a bit overscale.. more like 1/2 scale..

Jus' sayin'

The fit so far has been good. I haven't come across any issues yet, in fact most parts are almost a press fit.

Actually, the original Star Wars filming miniature was about 5' in size. They made a smaller one that's 32" in size for Empire. So I guess it depends on whether we go with "life size" or actual size for its scale. Or we could call it box scale since it fits in the box :P

Here are some of the inserts installed on the upper hull section.

Seeing how tight things would get, I painted some sections prior to assembly. This included the inner sections of the jawbox.

The outer walls are mostly separate parts which helps to keep the detail nice and sharp.

It's fun picking out all the various model parts that were used for the details on the original. There's a bunch of tank parts and engine bits from Tamiya 1/12 car kits that I recognize.

Awesome Carl!  I'm glad that we're seeing so much excitement about Star Wars, makes me want to crack open my Bandai X-Wing.  Still need to pick up a Y-Wing before they disappear completely.

Thanks Matt. I've got so many kits in the stash that I figured I might as well start on them. They're a great break from other more intensive projects on my workbench. Helps keep me motivated.

If you can't find the Bandai Y-Wing, I'd be willing to sell you my Fine Molds one. They're pretty much equal in quality.

Ok, I've run into the first parts that need a bit of work to fit. As I mentioned, I'm building the Falcon in flight so I needed to install the gear bay doors. There are five of them in total. The forward three fit fine but the rear two needed a small bit of work to make them fit. I had to shave off the detail inside the bays to get them level.

And a quick coat of Gundam white and here's where I am:

The hull halves are just test fitted together and there doesn't seem to be any issues.

Quick question Carl.  How much of those inserts are included in the kit, and how much are update/detail sets?  You mentioned up top that there are update sets you're using with this

So far, everything but the six rear grill vents are kit parts. I have some parts from Shapeways coming. They are for the cockpit, turret windows, blasters and radar dish. I'm thinking of getting a clear acrylic stand for the model. I have the larger one (for the 1/72 kit) made by TS Designs and it's quite nice.
