Tornado Gr1 / Gr4 differences

Can anyone tell me the differences between the Gr 1 and Gr 4 varients? Also, was the laser ranger exclusive to Gr1/Gr4 or did the German IDS carry it as well? And where and when did the linescan come into play?

The laser-ranger is exclusive to british Tornados, Gr I and IV.

Quick line up of differences.

 

1. Gr.1/1a has single chin pod mounted on the righthand side. Gr.4/4a has two, one on the portside too.

2. Gr.1 has two cheek mounted Mauser cannons, Gr.4 has the left side deleted.

3. Gr.1/1a has different head box configuration on the ejection seats to Gr.4/4a.

4. Gr.1/4 have guns, Gr.1a/4a are reconnaisance birds and have no cannons.

5. Gr.1a/4a have vertical windows (orange coloured) in front of the intakes for the sidescan gear.

 

When it comes to Tornado's, only the manly British "Fins" have chins or double chins, whereas German and Italian Tonka's are chinless wonders.

You also need to change the main display in the Pilot's Instrument Panel - the GR-1 has a large round display , looking alike an oldfashioned radar repeater , the GR-4's have this replaced by a square Multi function display , the old Re-hear PE set has one just the right size - or you could sratch build it pretty easily

 

If your building a Telic GR-4 - be areare of a coulle of other changes - 1) the rear instrument panel had a couple of glage shield fitted to the left and right displays, and 2) the rear cocpit had a couple of small joysticks , looking a lot like games controller fitted to the cockpit sill , approx, in line with the instrument panel - to allow the navagator to operate the chaff / flare dispensers while the aircraft was manavouring
