PR Mk XI

Great choice Ted. I built one a couple years ago.

Watch out for the fit of the front windshield and the lower cowling. The windshield is really thick and takes a bit to make it work. Most people have separated the lower cowl into two parts roughly where it meets the wing leading edge. They then use the kit part for the section on the wing and the resin cowl under the nose.

Thanks Paul,

I'm hoping for it to be fun.  I've had the conversion for a while and this seemed like the perfect place to start it!

Thanks for the heads up Carl,

I'll keep your advice in mind when I get to those spots.

Talk to you later,

Ted

Great choice Ted and as Carl mentioned look out for that windsheild and lower cowling, also I would say to use and modify the Tamita wing insert panels rather than the resin Alleycat blanks as they are not the best of fit and you will save yourself a lot of extra sanding and filling.

Thanks Andy,

Yes, I think that I will be following the advice of Carl and you by just using the parts that Tamiya has for the wings.  Hope to get some interior stuff done in the next couple of days so that I can post some progress.

Would like to find a couple of cockpit shots to see where the piece for the gun sight replacement sits.  I'm not sure from looking at the photo in the conversion instructions exactly what they want you to do.

Talk to you soon,

Ted

Perfect!  Thanks Andy!  That answers any questions that I had.  Nice work too!

So I just have to fill in the hole behind the belly camera ports which I had opened up before I purchased the conversion.

Talk to you soon,

Ted

Hi Ted:

one advice: drill the all the camera ports and drill round holes in the wings if you use the camera wing pods. Indeed, I simply tried painting the reverse side of the windows in black and this did not look realistic. The clear resin simply look like full black plastic!!! I quickly removed the paint.

By the way on the full-scale plane, there was nothing behind the windows! Doing that results in a far better appearance of the camera ports.

You don't need to glaze the lower camera ports.  On the real thing, they were covered by metal discs, held in place by a clip.  After take-off  the pilot pulled a toggle in the cockpit and dropped the discs.  Why?  To keep the camera ports perfectly clean during taxy-ing and take-off - you don't want to fly hundreds of miles over enemy territory, snap your pics, and have the PIs find a large splash of mud renders the sortie useless.   Many thanks to our late friend Edgar for that information.  We couldn't decide on colour though, red (for easy checking) seemed plausible, as did black.

If yoou choose to glaze the ports, the cameras were usually removed on the ground, and only fitted prior to a sortie.

Watching with interest, as I have this conversion.
