jeroenpeters Posted February 7, 2011 Share Posted February 7, 2011 (edited) Hi all, confession time! Next to WW1 and WW2 LSP modeling, I sometimes venture in 1/32 submarine modeling. Mostly midget subs; like the Neger, Seehund, Biber, X-craft, Molch, etc... But yesterday I managed to obtain this partly built 1/32 U-boot conning tower by Andrea miniatures. The large parts have been assembled and painted. So I took out the alcohol and am in the process of stripping this baby. I've already spotted some parts that can benefit from some extra detail, but this will possibly be a long term project. To prove that I sometimes finish something, here are some photo's of my Verlinden 1/32 'Hecht'. I've added a bearded resin figure in the small cupola. For a project like that conning tower I think when I took out the alcohol I'd need to drink it first, then start on the model. It will take some time before it's their turn to recieve paint though. I'm also diving in a pile of reference which there's a lot of. JRutman Posted February 7, 2011 Share Posted February 7, 2011 Cool! I also love this subject. Back a few years ago I scratchbuilt a TypeIX conning tower in 1/35 scale complete with about 10 figures. It had 2 twin 20mm and 1 quad 20mm and a deck crew man fishing some wine bottles out of the drink. I won second place at the Nats with it in the ship dio event. First place went to a complete replica of Titanic as it looks today on the oceans floor. Figure the odds of that showing up the year that I entered. I look forward to watching this progress. Will you be adding figures? I'm afraid I'm going to stick to the 1:72 Revell AG Schnelboot, though it's a really fine kit. I am not really interested in subs, the type XXI excepted, but having seen your georgeous paint job on the "Hecht" i´ll follow you doing this one. Did you try Revell´s Airbrush Cleaner to remove the old paint? This stuff it worth its weight in gold! Don´t know how i could do any paint job without this. Give it a try! LSP_K2 Posted February 8, 2011 Share Posted February 8, 2011 As coincidence would have it, I’m doing a conversion of the Revell type VII kit into a flak boat, situated inside a bunker. I’m considering a WIP for that effort here, though I haven’t gotten too far. For whatever it’s worth, I wrote to Revell AG suggesting a follow on to the type VII with a 1:72 type XXI, and they said they’d take it into consideration. It's getting there... @ Kevin: That's a pretty neat project you've got going on. I love the concrete effect you've achieved so far. Now that I'm catching up on my U-boot reading, I also picked up where I've left with my Bronco 1/35 Seehund. I always wanted this kit in the offering of Verlinden, but when I learned Bronco was going to release it, I got that one. The fit is excellent and the detail more than adequate. Still looking for a nice base. I'll drill two holes in the bottom of the sub, insert two pins in them.. .ah well.. I'll show it later on. jeroenpeters Posted February 12, 2011 Author Share Posted February 12, 2011 While looking for some towing cables and chains in my old armor stash I stumbled upon these Verlinden waterline models. I forgot I even had these and the good news is that the Seehund version includes a figure which will now take seat in the Bronco Seehund. jeroenpeters Posted February 12, 2011 Author Share Posted February 12, 2011 I know I'm straying from the conning tower, but this Seehund kit is just too easy. I can't stop. I've drilled holes in the bottom of the model and inserted copper tubes in them. They fit in other copper tubes with slight larger diameter. That way I can place the sub in and out of it's base. I just finished spraying the first layers. Pre shade gloss black. Light / medium grey. Followed bu darker grey mixed with a little bit of brown. jeroenpeters Posted February 13, 2011 Author Share Posted February 13, 2011 Okeeeee, some more progress on the Seehund. Decals are on. Satin coating is on. Ready for some more weathering. Torpedoes are also almost finished and painted. I think it's possible for a serious modeler to finish this baby in a day.. Painted and all. I on the other hand could do it in... a week! I also spend some time in the shed with a sanding machine and this piece of resin which actually also resembles a sanding machine! The edges were not smooth or equal. The PE sticked out a few mm. I sanding the forward and aft edge smooth and used some filler. I've also chosen a scheme. U-564. I'm studying the photo diary of this boat at the moment. This version has got the black cat and '3X'.
