That's really fascinating stuff Ron, thanks for posting.

When you read his comments on how difficult the old buzzard is to fly in formation it makes me realise

how good the pilots were I saw at the weekend flying four in a tight formation.

It's interesting to read his take on the Hurri, as I seem to recall that every wartime pilot account I have read commented on how stable the Hurri was, especially compared to the Spitfire.

The only thing I can think of that might explain this is that the "aftermarket" water tank they installed in that particular airframe to spray water into the oil cooler, combined with (I presume) lack of guns (and definately ammo) throws off the balance of the aeroplane quite a bit...

Cheers,

Appreciated the link to the flying the Hurricane. I too was surprised at how touchy the airplane is in pitch and what a chore it is to do formation flying with the Spitfire. It's always interesting to read how pilots relate to flying specific airplanes and quite often, myths are uncovered.

Got sent an e-mail yesterday from the company I have pre-ordered a DVD from last weeks Duxford show.

It had a link to their promo on you tube.

Along side it in the list was this footage of a crash of a Hurricane a few years ago.

Looks like his stbd gear would not lock down.

Amazing skill and courage. I believe she wasn't very badly damaged and is back in the air.

Suppose if you are going to crash this is how to do it:
