Revell Fw190 F8 on my coffee table

Hi guys,

I picked up my model at Swindon Model Centre yesterday shortly after it arrived at the shop. I had other things to do yesterday so this morning I'm watching the TV for the Royal Birth and trimming and taping parts of the kit, coffee cup full but still in my dressing gown!

First impressions: the usual chaotic Revell sprue layout with one significant change; slide moulding for gun barrel and exhaust tips.

No rivets, add them if you want to but as an ex Raf technician I'll be leaving them. If you can't see them on a painted real airframe you certainly won't see them when they're on a model.

Panel lines are very fine. The airframe surfaces are sort of matte finish so will benefit from a few minutes buffing with a finishing stick.

The engine looks good, obviously you'll want to add ignition harnesses, but that's about it. To my eyes the exhausts seem a little bit anaemic, maybe a couple of coats of Mr Surfacer to add some bulk?

I've got an Arado 196 half assembled as well as a Bf109. They are both nice kits but this is very good. As to accuracy, haven't run a vernier calliper over it yet, Mk 1 eyeball says it looks about right.

So now we just wait for the inevitable nit pickers, armchair experts and ne'er sayers to sling mud at it. Me? I'm waiting for the follow up A-8, A-5, etc.

Regards,

Bruce Crosby

I am building the "other one" right now.  I sure hope they did a better job on the wing to fuselage

attachment.  Mine was horrible with a large gap on each side.  Other than that it will be an F-8 when

I finish.

Cheers,

Mine arrived yesterday, and it really is a beautiful kit. The pinched and un-pinched canopies are a nice feature.

Builds real well without fit issues, and perfectly captures the lines of this aircraft. I built the test of this for Tamiya Model Magazine, and this was the result:

I'm waiting for my UK supplier to get them in stock ... and then I'll order a couple. I have a whole collection of the Hasegawa releases in the stash, including a couple of F8's ... but it seems this kit has taken it up another notch!

VERY nice 'Rush-Job' to get it ready for the magazine!! ... I remember Jennings mentioning a while back (before this kit was announced) that the frustrating issue with the Hasegawa kits is the canopy's un-pinched position when opened. So obviously Revell have paid attention to that little detail.

Nice 190 build James it looks nice.

As I have several Hasegawa 190's in my collection I won't be rushing anywhere to buy one but at least it looks like Revell may have done a Great 32nd kit. Probably the first since the 88's.

I guess we're in kind of the same position with the stash level (or most of yours might be already built!?) ... I was, really, internally debating on whether to get this kit at all - given Revell's recent history with accuracy issues.

But I think I'll agree ... It seems that they may be getting back on track (or at least back to the same form as the Ju-88, He-111 and Ar-196) with this effort. I'll stick a couple in the stash.

I can't wait to see what Mal Bedford does with one of these ... he really does love his Wurgers :D

... Now where's the Do-17z??

Lovely model James! It captures the whole character of the Wurger beautifully.

I forgot to mention the canopy choices. Blown or flat, both with open and closed, pinched options. Revell are really back on track with this kit. All we need is a bit of magic from Loic on the engine compartment, like a cowl oil tank and detail for the back end of the engine. If it's going to be modelled open there are a gazillion little wires and pipes and gizmos to add.

I've had time to look at the cockpit area. The kit has decals for seat belts, not the best option. HGW do a late war set just right for this model. The instrument gauge decals aren't very clear so back to Airscale or MDC for me. And a couple of little pieces of thin plasticard will do for the half bulkhead plates either side of the seat. The map/document bin on the side of the stbd IP is missing, as is the throttle on the port side.

The dropped flaps inside faces look like they should have more of a wedge profile, might be alleviated by some clever painting and shading to give some depth.

No doubt there will be resin and etch in the next few weeks.

And like Rog, I'd like to see what Mal does with one of these.

Bruce Crosby

Eduard have already announced that they'll release:

  • Bronze legs and resin gear doors
  • Resin wheels
  • Resin cockpit
  • Resin forward gun bay and cowl

I hope they do something for the engine too....maybe release a complete resin BMW801

Hello,

Did Revell fix the engine cooling fan?

Cheers

Boris

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they had taken that feedback on board early on in the piece and decided to amend their moulds accordingly ... If so, that would be a further indication that Revell have adjusted their approach and are more willing to take on board feedback from those who know what they're talking about, adjusting their releases accordingly.
