Gigant
Just to show a resin nose-job on a plastic kit: 100_0439 by Tom Taylor, on Flickr The biggest challenge was cutting each exhaust horn off its plastic base and re-installing them on the resin nose. The cowling flaps were almost as tough, but, you see the results. 100_0441 by Tom Taylor, on Flickr 100_0440 by Tom Taylor, on Flickr Since the model still exists, I can do more photos. For the record, this model was built a while back. Since I had no air-brush at the time, the finish was hand-bristle brushed Testors enamels. At the time AMtech was taking a standard P-40 IM kit, and modifying it by adding a resin nose or tail-piece for a different variant. This one was their so challenging of a build, that a well-published author wrote a chapter in a book devoted to its' construction. I bought both the book and then the kit, and went tool shopping! LSP_K2
Interesting. I got four of these kits in a trade a year or so ago. Gigant
Gazzas
Tom, Very nice job! Replacing those exhaust stubs and getting them lined up right would be tedious. Yes, more photos, please! Yes, more photos, please! Gaz As you wish, Sahib Gaz: [ Please excuse the erroneous time/date stamps. My camera's batteries were dead, and between the "down-times" I didn't bother to re-set it when I hurriedly did these photos today. I am amazed at the quality of AMtech's decals and how they have stood up over the years! This was model was built 15 years ago! Gigant
OK, Gaz, here is a teaser for you: An old 1/48 Monogram P-40B I decorated in "Pearl Harbor" period markings... 100_1533 by Tom Taylor, on Flickr
Gigant
As explained elsewhere, I decided to post this to illustrate how my "first-timer" for dealing with resin, with the right tools, was able to make a clean job of it. To install the resin nose piece, I used a micro-saw with a miter box, cutting each fuselage half separately, open-side down. To trim the resin nose-piece/plug, I used a flush-cut saw. In my case, I needed no putty and did not have to re-scribe the panel line. If you or others wish for me to share more, just ask, I can fill you in on the rest, to help if you decide to install the resin tail on your P-51, you will have a neater fitting seam like I did. That kit has great markings Kevin-well worth the effort.
Gazzas
Nice pics. Thanks! I would have never thought to use a mitre box to cut the piece. To date, I've been reticent to buy large resin AM external parts. Gaz Gigant

Gaz Here is a review that came out after I got the book and built it: http://www.p40warhawk.com/Models/Reviews/Models/AMtech/AMtech_F-L/P40F-L.htm If you look at the nose-piece, you will see why it needed trimming to fit the fuselage: As I recall, I C-Clamped it into the miter box.
