Tamiya 1/32 F4U-1 Corsair Birdcage

Hi all!

Here's a quick update on the Corsair build.

I spent the last few days working on further weathering the camo before applying the decals.

In this case, I added chipping all over the wings and fuselage.

I did this with a thin paint brush using Vallejo steel.

I couldn't find any reference pics with chipping on the flaps so I instead applied scratches with light blue.

The overall effect was then muted down a tad with a light overspray of highly diluted blue.

The model has also been gloss varnished in preparation for the decals.

Great job with the chipping affect.  That is something I have yet to master.  Yours looks realistic for sure...

Thanks Bryan!

I need to admit this was my 2nd try as initial I tried to do the chipping with yellow and failed miserably.

Had to repaint the whole wing and settled with steel.

Corsair looks fabulous. Paint work is spot on. I also like the photography............

I just recently purchased a complete (at least for what I wanted personally) photography lighting/backdrop setup, and hope I can also put forth some nice photo sessions like these.

Thanks Brian!

I actually took the photos with my mobile phone using a tripod.

I try to use natural light as much as possible and then play around with the exposure.

I saw some photography lighting/backdrop sets being advertised recently on many websites and managed to get the medium size one from ebay.

But it turned out to be big enough for small parts like a cockpit.

The Corsair is now too big for it.

Looking forward to trying out in the future though.

Looks quite promising!

I like your effect.  I like the fabric/metal color variation.  Horizontal stabilizer flaps were metal?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mark

Thanks Mark!

As far as I'm aware, those sections were fabric.

I have a pic that shows a lighter colour on those portions although it could also be a light effect.

I chose to paint them like for the extra variation.

Hi all!

The Corsair is now on the final stretch!

I'm so glad I used the EagleCal decals which went on without much fuss.

The Tamiya decals on the other hand... had to go over them several times with decal solution and even make several small cuts all over the decal to help the solution soak in more.

With those out of the way, all panel lines were highlighted with a black wash followed by a varnish of Ammo ultra matt.

Next and final step will be weathering with oils!
