Hawker Typhoon

Hi,

As I got my the MAN sets for my old Revell kit, I also had a look at my MDC kit and compared both kits. I was really amazed when I saw that the Revell tail was nearly half a centimeter taller! Surprisingly, I never saw any mention about this difference anywhere?!?

Did anybody have a close look to this?

I should dig to find the Bentley plans but I do not remember any tail height variation...

Well, they are too large for my scanner! And even if they were not, I would not do it in any case as Arthur Bentley is still selling them (for a quite reasonable price). Last, the guy deserves to be supported.

The check revealed an interesting result: the drawing tail is 2mm taller than the MDC one and 2mm shorter than the Revell one! This explains that!

I'll let the MDC as it is as visually it looks ok. However, I will sand a little bit the top of the Revell one when I will work on that one.

Thierry, pardon my ignorance, what are MAN sets? I just picked one of these Revell beasts up. Plan on getting the Barracuda, seat, wheels, and that radiator intake. I've seen MDC's cockpit set, exhausts, and wheels, for this beast. But, they are a bit pricey for me. I was going to use their pics for reference and "doctor" the Revell pit.  So, just curious what the MAN sets are?  Thanks!

Thanks Thierry. I clicked on the link you provided, but the only thing for sale there appears to be a 1/6 scale naked woman and a Spitfire decal set. Are you sure that was the right link? The parts review really showed some pretty good looking stuff. How much did it cost ya?

Seems to be showing Typhoon resin parts when I click the link, was wanting to see this 1/6 naked woman too :(    :)

I realize full well that AB has a good reputation, though I'm not quite certain what that reputation is based upon, but I would never, ever trust any drawings 100% for dimensional accuracy.

There are not a lot of people for which I am ready to say I'm blindly trusting them regarding plans accuracy! Arthur Bentley is one of those happy few with Monforton or Neely. The reason is simple: he is creating plans from his own measures of full scale airfames, manufacturer sectional measures and other sources without any guess work. And he is so paranoid about accuracy, he is refining them for decades! This explains why he did not release tons of plans such as Richard Caruana, Hubert Cance and others who do a correct but not terrific work. In this league, Bentley is an obvious exception. His original Typhoon plans have been made forty years ago and progressively refined.

It is no mistery all the planes for which he made plans resulted in the release of kits commonly accepted as the most accurate ones. I never had the opportunity to meet him but others here like Iain or Radu did. Ask them what they think... ;-)

MAN parts are nice but not as refined as the MDC ones. If you are on a budget, you should rather put the focus on some MDC sets such as the spinner, LG legs and exhausts. Bomb pylons and cockpit are also recommended but obviously less visible. For its contents, the price of the MAN set is acceptable but not cheap (around 50$).

The Barracuda parts are top quality ones but I do not know if they may be easily used on the Revell kit as they have been made for the PCM Tempest. I am especially thinking to the radiator part.

OK, thanks, Thierry. I now know more that I did before about the man. I had actually considered drawing full size scale plans for both the Typhoon and Jagdtiger (started the Jagdtiger in fact), but accurate dimensional information is something I sorely lack on both, and I wouldn't bother seriously proceeding without it.

Thanks Thierry! I do like the MDC sets. Think that's the direction to go. Barracuda makes wheels, seat, and radiator grill. I believe the wheels and seat are ok for the typhoon.
