I had a very busy period with work, with several business trips. In between, I managed to work on the Dauntless, but didn't got around posting stuff. So, what follows next happened in the past, and any good advice cannot be followed anymore! Even more, the Dauntless is finished, but I will not show pictures of the finished article yet. Anyway, I continued with the decals: The old Matchbox decals behaved well with Sol and Set, but needed some touch-ups, as the next pictures show: The pictures were taken before the excess decal solvent was wiped off. Touch-ups were executed later on during the build. I haven't made any dedicated pictures of that. The wobbly gloss was on the decals and became better after a coat of Klear. The crew needed to be assembled and painted too. This is what I started with: After cleaning up and painting, they look like this: Good enough below a closed canopy. They got sunglasses (Tamiya smoke) and the pilot's left hand was twisted to rest upon the throttle handle. Walkways on both wing roots were made from 8 mm wide black decal strip: A suitable tail wheel was found in the spares box. It started life as a much too small main wheel of an Airfix MiG-15 (the newer tool): More in the next post. mgbooyv8 Posted May 21, 2017 Author Share Posted May 21, 2017 Continuing from my previous post: The propeller was sprayed: And the engine was painted and eyeballed in the centre of its mounting, with help of the cowling. Remember that I sawed it of earlier, because its mounting was glued upside down on its bulkhead. The ends of the gun barrels were installed next. I replaced the kit parts with with some pieces of brass tube . I didn't make a separate picture of them. The engine cowling got some pieces of sprue and strip, so it had some area to glue it to the fuselage: Once installed, nothing can be seen of them. The frames of the canopy parts were hand painted. I have a fairly steady hand and the frames are quite prominent, so painting is easy. Here they are after the first coat of Interior Green: In the end, two coats of interior green and two coats of Sea Blue were required. Any errors were corrected with toothpics dipped in white spirit (I used enamels). Test fitting the flaps revealed that the lower ones protruded behind the trailing edge. It was decided to mount them lowered. No, no attempt to detail the inners was considered! The rear guns were painted and got a scratch armour plate to add interest. They were installed lowered with the doors closed. The gunner was glued on his seat with white glue. The pilot got a scratch reflector gun sight. He had to be raised in his seat a few mm to enable him to watch over the glare shield and through the gun sight. Oh, and the solid exhaust pipes were drilled open to give some depth and were installed. From now on, the final bits were installed: wheel doors, antenna, landing light (painted), cradle and bomb, rudimentary wing pylons, canopy, antenna and antenna wire. Oh, and a new, correct pitot tube was made. Then, the Dauntless was finished!!! Here's a picture: More pictures later in the week! mgbooyv8 Posted May 23, 2017 Author Share Posted May 23, 2017 Thanks guys! Ofcourse, I forgot to mention activities during the last stages of the build. The tyres got flat spots. A few panel lines, hatches and steps were highlighted. The whole model got a misted coat of Alclad Matt Cote to obtain a satin finish. The walkways on the wing root got some scuffing marks with Tamiya weathering powders And finally, the antenna wire got insulators simulated with blobs of PVA glue.
