Fledgling Swallow - 1/32 FROG/Hasegawa Me 262V-3 prototype

Well, thanks to the extreme generousity of Iain Ogilvie (LSP '32SIG'), it looks like I am in with one of these:

I hope to turn it into one of the prototype V1 to V4 Me 262 aircraft, although I haven't decided exactly which one yet (I may need you to help me decide here).

For a start, all four versuches were tail-draggers, and V1 first flew on the power of only a single Jumo 210 powered propeller engine installed in the nose (with clean wings - no jet engines installed). It later flew with the same prop engine and two turbojets, so I am quite tempted to make this kit as one or the other?

I would dearly love to use a spinner from a Bf 109, but that would be classed as cross-kitting, so is most likely verboten!

Alternatively, I could go for V3, which was the first to fly purely on turbojet power alone and had quite a chequred development career.

This is probably pushing the boundrys of this GB somewhat, but the spirit is there as I would have to scratch build all of the items I need to complete the alteration works - I have LSP Kevin's blessing on this in principle.

So, what say ye?

Cheers

I'm planning on the V3 myself, but the V1 is obviously the most radical of the three, and would perhaps be the most interesting. I think High Planes did a kit in 1/72, but other than that, I've never seen it done (especially not in 1/32). I reckon if you're after a consensus though Derek, V3 all the way.

While the prop and twin tubo's would be interesting, the V-3 from what you've said has endless possiblities...I'd pick that myself for this GB and do the one or three engined versions as a follow up ! :evil_laugh:

Thank you guys - V3 it is then. If anyone has any really good gen (info/intel) on this aircraft, I would really appreciate it as I have next to nothing on the 262 in general (one day, I will buy all four Classic Luftwaffe aircraft Me 262 volums, but that isn't going to happen any time soon!).

The only thing I know for sure about this version (and the previous ones) Derek is that the landing gear bays were further forward. They were moved aft when the tricycle undercarriage configuration was introduced.

That is useful to know Kev - thanks (this may be the most difficult part of the conversion).

It would be worth checking the documentation held here

They have many manuals that can be downloaded for research - you might find something
