the RAM panels look / are too thick. Same issue with the MENG kit I believe. Maybe an extra spray of primer can solve it?

If you're thinking of raising the surrounding surface, you'd have to mask off all of the raised RAM panels, and use a deliberately thick primer.

Gray automotive high build primer would bring it up. Con - I think the problem would be losing the surrounding detail. Pros, may outweigh the con - If you painted the whole plane in the color for the RAM panels, then masked everything it wouldn't cost any more effort than normal. That would also put anothe rlayer on to build it up. Interesting concept that would save the uneven look that seems to hapen after sanding.
