In Kreigsmarine service, it was commissioned Feb 24th 1945 and commenced training but never went on a patrol, being scuttled on May 4th near Flensburg. In 1957 it was raised, overhauled and put into service with the Bundesmarine as the Wilhelm Bauer and then as a reasearch sub with a civilian crew to test innovations for the U206 class. After a collision with the Destroyer Z-3 in 1980, it was taken out of service and eventually sold to the German Maritime Museum Association who turned it into a museum ship in 1984 at Bremerhaven. BradG Posted July 31, 2014 Author Share Posted July 31, 2014 It was definitely a good machine, capable of 17 or 18 knots submerged which would have been a huge threat to allied shipping 42/43.
