U-boat Type XXI

I didn't go too nuts on the weathering as 2540 never saw action before being scuttled. She was raised in 1957 and put back into service as a research ship and is now preserved in Germany as a museum. It's 1/350.

Brad,

whays the story behind this U boat.

In Kreigsmarine service, it was commissioned Feb 24th 1945 and commenced training but never went on a patrol, being scuttled on May 4th near Flensburg. In 1957 it was raised, overhauled and put into service with the Bundesmarine as the Wilhelm Bauer and then as a reasearch sub with a civilian crew to test innovations for the U206 class. After a collision with the Destroyer Z-3 in 1980, it was taken out of service and eventually sold to the German Maritime Museum Association who turned it into a museum ship in 1984 at Bremerhaven.

The type XXI was quite an impressive machine. I have the Revell kit to finish (one of these days), and I really wish they'd do one in 1:72. I grabbed this book a couple of years ago, and it's a splendid reference on the machine. Yours looks really good, Brad.

It was definitely a good machine, capable of 17 or 18 knots submerged which would have been a huge threat to allied shipping 42/43. From a modelling standpoint thought, I think it's kinda bland and I hope Revell put out a 1/72 WWI submarine first :)
