F4U-1D Brooklyn Butcher VMF-512 USS Gilbert Island, July 1945

I am starting a new build, it will be my Tamiya F4U-1D, it will be all OOB, no aftermarket with the single exception of a Montex mask set. I chose to model the Brooklyn Butcher VMF-512 USS Gilbert Island, July 1945. This will be an in-flight, gear up, with pilot, loaded with bombs and rockets. It should go pretty quick without excessive cockpit detailling, no gear, wings down. I knew after I saw the pilot figure, it had to be this way.

Cool! I've yet to see one of these built up in flight.

If you're using the kit display stand, you may want to put a gentle bend into it to give a bit more life. I did this with my Spitfire and it looks much better than wings level going straight.

Carl, you need to buy more Spitfires. Your a little short of a squadron! Grey Nurse is my favorite Spit and Aussie to boot!

I honestly didn't expect to get this far, but most of the cockpit is in sub assemblies, or about as far as I can go before some paint. The pilot is fitted, hands are on the controls, seatbelts bent into place, but I may remove the steel ones and replace them with dollar bill straps. Assembly on this is so perfect, yet fragile, but I am getting through it fast by not having to scrape, sand, and triple-fit every single part. I love it.

I have to say, I have built other scale Tamiya aircraft, I built Tamiya tanks, and a few race cars. But I have never built a kit that goes together as easily, and as perfectly as this kit. Every time I fit something, I am amazed at how precise this thing is. The only ppace so far that will need any filler, is the arms on the pilot, everything else is perfect.

Isn't nice when everything falls together like a lego. I build the basic assembly of Tamiya corsair in less then 50 hours, including engine and partial cockpit detailing. Having said that, I should probably finish it as well :)

Cheers

On this build I am going to do a lot of pre-building, most everything is going to be GSB, with interior green and black cockpit, a few metal color accents, this should go fast with being a in flight build, the pilot painting might take a while.

Last night I was evaluating how much of the cockpit will be visible with the pilot inside, not a whole lot, I will put barracidacals placards where they can be seen, but that's all. The canpoy will be in place, so I'm not too concerned.

Does the -1D kit still lack a cockpit floor and have an option for a window on the belly? Their 1/48 kit, did, so I'm guessing they didn't get less accurate.  That's always been my favorite feature of the early Corsair. It was said if the ground crews were not careful, anything dropped down there could come flying into the pilot's space if he rolled inverted!
