Shinden-Kai WIP

This is my first scratch built cockpit. I am building a 1/32 scale N1K1J Shiden-Kai or the allied code name "George". The kit is alot like the old Otaki kits in that the surface detail is there, but the internal details are almost non existant. So in order to remedy that I had to scrath build the entire thing. To illustrate what I have done here is a link to review of the kit I started out with.

This is my most ambitious project to date, I will post more as I go along..

Good on you mate for tackling this one. I have this kit in the stash, so I know what the cockpit is like! If the Rising Sun topic gets up for the next GB, I'll probably be building my example for it. I'll definitely be following your build, that's for sure.

You're off to an excellent start my friend.I built the same kit several year back also with a scratch built cockpit. Not a bad kit at all, just needed a few improvements mainly the interior, trailer edges and gear bays. Here's a photo of mine for you .

  • 2 weeks later...

Began basic assembly of the cockpit tub, trying to get the alignment just right, the throttle quadrent and all of the ancilleries will be added later, I will be getting some belts to dress up my seat, made from copper sheet. Scratch buidling can be frustrating somtimes but the satisfaction of it makes it all worth it.

Hi logan181,

nice scratching.

Last year I met an Englishman who hardworked on a scratchbuilt interior during a modelshow in Berlin. A guy strolled by and asked him "why bothering with scratchbuilding when you can buy it at the salesstore nearby?" Our Englishman looked up and answered very cool "where is the fun in it?" I will never forget the startled face of our guy who disappeared red faced in the crowd.

Go on with your show logan!

Cool John! :P It's always a hoot to watch others scratch-building techniques. Looking sweeeeet!

P.S. I noticed you've posted less than 20 times...so far. Hope to see lots more, and a warm welcome to LSP! Russ

Very nice work John. I really like the seat - great scratch building all round. I'm having a stab at this kit over in the Rising Sun GB, so I'll be watching your build with interest.

This is the best photo I could find of the cockpit I can send you a larger version of this off board.

Sounds good, thanks John!

Folks,

I think I have a George Aero Detail lying about.

I could scan some images amd PM them to you.

Sincerely,

Mark

Ditto with your offer Mark. Not sure if the PM system will take image attachments, but I can PM you my email address if you like, or we can come to some other arrangement.

Kev,

PM sent

My only concern with posting the pictures here is with copyright infringement.

If there are any Advocates out there that can allay this concern, I'll post them here.

Sincerely,

Mark
