RacingMonk
Interesting video of the recovery of Flt Sgt Copping's P-40 from the desert. It show some of the original paint colours which will now, sadly, be lost forever..... dennismcc
alaninaustria
What is the actual status of this recovery? Is it still sitting in a crate in Egypt?? It should be back in the UK for restoration and public display!! Cheers Alan
dennismcc
It has been "restored" and is now on display in Egypt. Discussed here on Britmodeller: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235031423-desert-kittyhawk-restoration/ And http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235031690-a-badly-made-airfix-model/ Cheers Dennis Edited January 10, 2018 by dennismcc

Cees Broere
And in depth at the FlyPast forum. Very sad, especially as it had been dismantled by experts. Cheers Cees BiggTim
1to1scale
It looks pretty bad, they didn't even try to match colors or insignia. It was an amateur job. BiggTim
fightersweep
Anyone spot the original Dark Earth and Dark Green under the wing root fillet? No objection to the airframe staying in Egypt, but if only it had either been left as is or properly restored. Crying shame! BiggTim
dodgem37
You win some. You lose some. And some get rained out. What a drag. Sincerely, Mark BiggTim
Cees Broere
What's more out there......... A substantial Martin Maryland has been found but the location is in a "politically sensitive area". The Syrian Spitfire 22's (in case they had survived) are probably gone forever. "Lady Be Good" or at least the dismembered remains of her still lie in a compound in Libiya. The skeletal remains of a SM-79 still lie somewhere in the Sahara. Cheers Cees BiggTim
TonyT
Worse is its now near the coast. BiggTim
RBrown
Thanks for posting the video. The vestiges of the camouflage on the lower wing clearly show the RAF applied Azure Blue has been sandblasted away in several places revealing the original Curtiss applied Sky Gray. Bstarr3
Well, I guess Egyptians keeping a British artifact in one of their museums against objection is only a case of "turn about is fair play" . . . BiggTim
TonyT
Not just us, I seem to remember the partner to cleopatra's needle on show in London is in the US in Central Park. Edited January 10, 2018 by TonyT BiggTim and GusM
alaninaustria
So, where did the historically significant Spitfire that was given away from the UK museum end up??? Cheers Alan That restoration looks horrible and is .... of well, am at a loss of appropriate words!! BiggTim
dennismcc
The historically significant Spitfire was a shell and was given to a UK Aviation company in exchange for them to send a crew out to recover the aircraft and store it in a safe place in Egypt, the value of the Spitfire was deemed to be the same as the cost of the recovery. There is more info on this deal buried in this thread https://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?126933-Flt-Sgt-Copping-s-P-40-From-The-Egyptian-Desert/page76 Cheers Dennis BiggTim
