1/24 Hurricane I, 32 Sqdn Biggin Hill/Hawkinge

Recommended Posts

Yaaaah! 1/24 prop, thank goodness!

I'm having trouble with 1/32 props, so small!

I am building this for 2 reasons, firstly I have built the Trumpy IIc before and its a great kit, especially inspired by the two IIc's being built by Lancman and Wrongway at the moment.

Its a good excuse to do another.

Secondly I am building this mainly oob as an antidote to my 109 build on the Trip to Russvile group build.

I'm using the profile in the "Aircraft of the Aces, Legends of WW2" book.

Pete Brothers was often on TV talking about the BoB. He died only 18 months or so ago.

Apparently in this machine throughout July and August 1940 he was credited with 6 Bf 109's a Bf 110 and a Do 17.

Also its about time the real hero of the BoB aircraft-wise was recognised, the Hurricane, not the Spit!

Obligatory box-top shot:

I will be doing the markings using some Techmod decals from the stash and may have to cut the codes by hand.

GAME ON!

Right on! I'm sorely tempted to get the Mk I. This might just do it for me. Another build I'll be following.

You can teach monkeys to fly Spitfires. Real men fly Hurricanes! Taka taka taka........... :)

NICE! I am tempted by this GB but atm have nothing to build for it.........save a new Revell release of the Lysander. But after looking at Fozzys build of it, im not sure if would even be satisfied with it. not sure my scratchbuilding skills are up to it.

Already built a spit (me likee variety so only certain planes I would ever build twice) and between this cool build and a few others Id be crowding the Hurri market.

:) Hmmmm may have to think on this one. My OCD wont let me work on 2 builds @ the same time, so gotta finish DB first whatever I do.

Gonna be cool this one..........Ive heard nothing but great things about the kit, and with ur skills should be a knockout.........

One of my favourite all time quotes, Robert Shaw has just landed on the heavily bombed airfield and sees an RAF Police Corporal with some Luftwaffe prisoners.

"What have you got there corporal?"

"Prisoners sir, Officers to the Officers Mess, NCO's to the guardroom"

"Well they made this mess get them to clean it up!"

"What about the officers sir?"

"Give 'em a bloody shovel"

Seems I have gravitated to having one detailed build on the go and another one done fairly quickly mainly oob.

Think its an antidote for ams, seems to be working.

The Lysander would be cool oob maybe you could do a nice black scheme? Break from foiling anyway!

You could always scratchbuild a Defiant!!!!! :evil_laugh:

Didnt think about that.....twould be cool. Would like to use some of the Montex masks for it, but no BOB masks  -

Would love to do one of the camo schemes with either black on the bottom or the black/white confusion combo underside scheme, but Im not aware what Lysander schemes flew in the BoB.

Found this......but is it accurate for BoB schemes on the Lysander?

"During the Battle of Britain, fighters were painted in green/brown camouflage with light blue or light grey undersides. Later in the war, the brown was replaced by grey. Night bombers had black undersides. Reconaissance planes were painted all-grey."

HA! Ur a funny guy!  LOL

This will be a cool build all the way round...........watching with interest......... :evil_laugh:

Thanks Keith,

I'm taking a break from the fumes of Revell Contacta for a while. I've been furiously gluing together as much as I can before I have to reach for the paint!

This is the scheme I'm doing. Its reproduced from the "Aircraft of the Aces - Legends of WW2"

I trust you will honour the "Fair use" criteria here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

In the book there are a few photo's of this squadron's Hurricanes, none appear to have any roundels on the lower wing as does the artist's

impression above.

Any ideas regarding the black and white square below the canopy on the fuselage.

Doesn't appear on the other photo's.

Also the lower colour appears to be whitish/grey rather than sky.

Any experts out there help me with any of these queries??? :D

i think for the benefit of all concerned, and assuming we all ask him EXTRA nicely, it would be great if Edgar could provide (yet again??) a synopsis of what colour schemes were used and when, as i am sure a lot of the schemes that are being talked about were not actually BoB

they are still cool, but obviously some guys want to get the period / details right etc etc

pretty please Edgar???

Hope he can give some advice Nick. Got a feeling there was a period when no Hurricanes had lower roundels.

Looked at the RAF history bit for 32 Sdn and it shows a scheme with sky undersides and no roundels but the artists impression don't look like sky to me!

Anyway, suppose I'd better get on with it.

At the start I decided I wasn't going to display the engine or the gunbays so I got into a frenzy of just gluing stuff together.

I will add most of the unseen detail to give weight to the model but its just very liberating just cutting and gluing.

This is the propellor hanger or engine for those who wish to display it:

Here is the lower wing with the fuel tanks and oil tank in place. I also put the gunbays in but not the guns as they wont be seen. The bays

locate with each other top and bottom so it prevents flexing or bending of the wing surfaces:

P8180005.jpg

Whilst its very nice to show how all this stuff goes together so well  , its helpful to show the fixes that can be needed with this particular kit.

I have built the IIc before so its familiar territory for me.

One of the issues are the fit of the cowlings over the cannons or guns in this case.

The fairing is narrow and needs to be spread. Both Graham(Lancman) and Don(wrongway) are familiar with this problem with their IIc builds so it appears to be a problem across all the Trumpy 1/24 Hurricane kits.

The fix is to put a couple of 10thou card inserts inside the fairings:

P8180006.jpg

Then sand them carefully until you get a flush join with the top and bottom of the wing leading edge:

More fixes soon.

This is a very large model and the opportunities for poor fit are amplified by the sheer scale of the upper and lower wings.

Here Trumpy have kindly moulded a small triangle on the upper wing at the wing root to meet up with the rest

of the panel moulded on the lower wing.

Probably thought it was a kind of challenge! :post1:

P8191466.jpg

I've dropped the inboard flap in place to show the gap.

Simple fix is to pop in a piece of 10 thou card:

P8191480.jpg

And the fit is much better:

P8191481.jpg

I will tidy up the small vertical gap with a bit of filler later.

The outboard flap seems to sit a bit low with the surface of the lower wing:

P8190008.jpg

Put a piece of 20thou card in to bring it up a bit:

P8191479.jpg

Nice and flush now:

P8191482.jpg

So this is where I am now:

P8191485.jpg

The wing is about 90% complete. I've got to tidy up the recess for the large lights and chrome them and fit the covers.

Likewise install the wingtip lights and pop a few pieces into the gear bay.

Next job will be to start on the cockpit.

More thrilling episodes soon!

I had to put in the next emoticon as my 5 year old daughter loves seeing it!

NOICE! Lookin good Phil!

I too like it when problems/fixes are presented via pics.

Makes it nice to not only see the solutions for anyone who would come along behind and build the same plane, but also some of the fixes can be applied to other projects in the same manor.

If I can wrangle it (and SilverWings and my wallet cooperates  ) Ill be joining you in this BoB GB!

Cheers,

Brian

Thanks mate for kind thoughts.

Well now Silverwings eh!

Means a Gladiator or a CR 42?

Hmm Cr 42 would be difficult for a scheme as memory says they only took part a few times and got so badly shot up they were

withdrawn from the battle.

That means a Gladiator!

Nice. You'll be able to get yer Bob's buckles stuff out!

That would be really cool in a camo scheme!
