This will be my attempt at a 1/32nd civilian aircraft entry into the US NATs in 2017. I know it sounds like a long time away, but I have many categories i want to enter, and this is one of them.........and the way I build, I will need all the time I can get.

The Extra 330-SC N73KG, is flown by Jeff Boerboon, who is a professional pilot in the IAC (International Acrobatic Club sponsored by the EAA; Experimental Aircraft Association). If you've never been to a major airshow with IAC level aircraft, these planes are unreal to watch.......................

The Extra 300 SC is the cutting edge in balanced, high end, responsive, and supremely maneuverable planes, designed to do 1 thing; aerodynamically impossible looking maneuvers.....................the power to weight ratio is over the top and allows this thing to do the seemingly impossible.

Here is N73KG and Jeff Boerboon in action at the 2014 IAC US Nationals:

On to the kit...............

When you first open the Icaerodesign Extra 330-SC, it is almost a laughable experience for any LSPer. This thing quite literally came in the smallest box I have ever seen for an LSP. Here is the box with the box from my last build:

And it gets even funnier, if you look at it with the box from my SU-30:

Of course this is all due to the fact that the 1:1 aircraft if just that small. Here is a really good idea of size, taken with another 1/32nd model, this time, the 1/32nd Monogram Phantom mustang, whos place it took on the bench:

Lets take a look at what you get in the box................

Here is what you see upon opening the small box:

The entire kits contents save the instructions and paint masks fits very nicely on my assembly mat, on the short side of my bench:

Starting off with the fuselage, you can again get a good idea of how diminutive this airplane is IRL. Although small, its well molded, fits nicely together, and even has small alignment tabs as well:

You can see the very nicely molded cowl. It is however EXTRAORDINARILY thin. I mean thin to the point you can see through it, and it wouldn't take much to put your finger through the top..............and I nearly did. So I re-enforced the cowl inside with thick CA gel.

Its very easy to see the Styrofoam packing bit inside the cowl:

This will make a cool little model when complete:

You get a very nice resin canopy as well. I have yet to see its equal as to scale thinness............although clear, with no evident major distortions, it is quite flexible:

Next, we move onto the solid resin wings, the bag of resin containing the elevators, horizontal stabilizers, rudder and final, a shot of the MASSIVE ailerons:

Next,we have one of the centerpieces of the kit, the completely 3D printed internal frame. In this shot 1 or 2 of the frame rails needs straightening, and the whole thing will need some sanding and primer:

EVEN MORE..............

Next up is a big (for this kit anyway) bag of resin containing the engine, exhaust, spinner, prop and what not, then a second bag containing internal cockpit parts like the seat, rudder pedals and the like, and finally a 3rd bag containing the wheels, wheel pants, and the such:

Prop blades have some slight flash on them, and will have to have the tips filled and sanded but NDB really:

DSC04331.jpg

You get a small book style computer printed instruction sheet that seems easy to follow, and the pics seem very accurate to what you actually get in the box:

You also get a complete set of full paint masks in my favorite mask material, Oracal 810, along with a full color placement guide:

Finally, you get a small B&W envelope that contains some sponsor decals, and a small PE fret, with seat belts, grills, internal bulkheads, the external attitude indicator and a clear sheet w/some instruments on it for the resin IP:

All for now folks, I will be soaking all the resin parts in Black Magic (formerly Westleys) Bleche Wite (and YES its spelled like that) overnight to remove any grim, gunk or mold release agents that happen to still be present.

Cheers for now!

Fantastic project, Brian! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with this one. Should be great!

A couple of favours, por favor: firstly, this kit looks to be a different release from the one we have in the Kit Database - does it have a kit number?

Secondly, since it looks like a different release (just a different scheme, I understand), I'd like to add it to the Kit Database too. Any chance of a nice, straight-on photo of the box for the occasion?

Impressive Brian, i see you've got your 2017 projects  laid out for you, especially the Extra 330!

Have fun building,

Jack.

Thanks Jack! I think it will be a REALLY fun project, and cant wait to get started!   This will be COMPLETELY opposite of my last build, small, modern, shiny, and completely smooth and clean.

I also forgot to mention that I have been in contact with Setal from Icaerodesigns, and will be acquiring a second Lycoming 6 cylinder engine to totally "bling-out" and mount on an engine stand next to the finished model.

I intend on chroming out the exhaust, push rods, and some other parts, along with a shiny brass finish on the cylinder tops and some scratch detailing and AM parts.   This thing will also have plug wire, and possibly even some braided hose too.

I intend on making a custom engine stand using similar brass soldering techniques as I used on my last build:

The engine stand will be made of smaller square brass tubing, but in the end will be a tiny complex model in itself, and hopefully will look like this:

Lycoming_O-320-D2A_engine_A.JPG

I have also even ordered some resin caster wheels for the bottom as well.

More progress soon, as I now have all the parts soaking in some Bleche White.

Cheers!

Man, you're such a pro ... the zero is barely gathering dust and you have a full thread cranked up on this one! Love watching your work Brian, I have been a big fan since I first saw your Su-27 - keen to see how you go on an air show finish, my next one is going to be one of those ...

Cheers

Jim
