panel lines in balsa

Would a cricular cutting blade in a microdrill work? Maybe if you mark out the lines and follow them carefully? I have to admit it is only an imaginative guess as I have no idea. Brad may know something.

Cheers mate,

very, very carefully...... :D , but kidding aside, don't overdo it, because cut lines might start to widen out.

I would just cut the surface slightly with an X-acto knife and let it be (ofcourse after everything is smooth and even).

Maybe Erwin, as expert in balsa, could comment further on the subject?

My two pennies,

Jack.

You could also coat it with a few thick coats of strong laquer, sand them smooth and then scribe into the finish itself.

...lightly of course...

Now that is clever...

Try this:

Seal, prime and smooth the whole thing. Then with the thinnest drafting tape, do all the panel lines, making sure the tape is well snugged down. Lightly at first, so no primer runs under the tape, put down three or four coats of primer; let it cure thoroughly. Then carefully block sand the whole thing until the tape shows up. After the tape is visible consistently, CAREFULLY peel the tape back upon itself and you have beautifully engraved panel lines!

Regards,

Ross

That is a great idea Chris...

Brad...I think you should try it and tell me how it goes

My friend who builds R/C draws them on and clear coats over everything.

I was thinking in a similar manner. If you use a drafting pencil with a harder lead, like an "H", and just draw them on, with the correct pressure, it should make nice panel lines.

Hi Jens,

My advice would be NOT to try it. Unless you are very good in sribbing lines in plastic too.

But in balsa,it might work fine going with the woodgrain. But when going accross you will damage the wood.

It's just one of the limitations you have to accept when building balsa planes.

But you don't have to take my advice. Who am I to teach a trick or two about balsa kits.

Only if the knife blade is dull. :)

Jens,

If you intend to fly the model, do NOT scribe panel lines into the wood's surface. That will weaken the structure. The chart tape and priming method outlined above by Astro32 is how the pro R/C builders do it.

D is right, scribing panel lines into the wood in a radio control model will only help to weaken the structure, best to avoid that. Even on a static model, scribing directly into the wood would not be easy and just wouldn’t look that good because of the grain, soft, medium, or hard balsa would probably give you different results and cross grain would be a real pain.

A couple people have suggested drawing panel lines on and that would probably be your best bet, these models can take a beating. You can either use a pencil or maybe even a gel pen, just don’t go with black as it will stand about way too much. And as others have said, seal it with a dope proof paint.

Another option is after you have your final coats on and probably before you put your decals on is to scribe very gently into the paint, it will give you a very subtle panel lines.

The Top Flight kits are standoff scale ( I used to have the P-40) so if you compare the parts to plans, they won’t match up and being standoff scale, drawing the lines on it would probably be your best bet.
