Ki-84 22nd Sentai FINISHED

Ok, I'm in the running now! My Hayate landed today and I've started by spraying the cockpit parts natural metal. Progress is going to be a tad slow as I have to jettison the seat and replace it with the Eduard offering. {it's still in the store waiting to be mailed to me} Oh, and Wikman, I like your Otsu, I have one too but I'm gonna do that one later on I think. We'll see

This is the kit I'm using:

  • 2 weeks later...

Eduard set arrived today, so progress has begun. Slow, but I've replaced some of the stock Hasegawa detail with the Eduard set. I found out when I looked at the package that this set for the Ki-84 is a partial color etch set. Damn the good luck! I don't know about you folks but I pick and choose what I want to use from PE sets. Some things I build from styrene stock when I feel that the 2D look of the PE set is inadequate. Such is the case with the rudder cables and rollers for them as they pass under the seat (not yet installed). I've also scratched part of the rudder pedals and bar as well. Hope you like my "in progress" shots. More tomorrow probably.

Tim

Ok, a couple more for tonight...still working on the cockpit floor and associated controls.

this first shot shows the controls on the right side of the cockpit floor. I think they're flap, landing gear and maybe cowl flap controls but I'm not sure.

This second shot, shows some of the work I added to the rudder pedal assembly. The rudder cables are streteched sprue attached to a PE part with a disc punched from my Waldron subminiature punch and die set for an attachment pin. The swaged ends of each cable were made by coating the sprue with Mr. Surfacer 500 and letting it dry and painting it silver. Oh, I weathered the cockpit floor a bit but am not happy with the results I got. Tomorrow is another day though :)

That's all for tonight. Hope you liked the shots...slow but steady progress.

Unless it's not obvious, the trim wheel is scratchbuilt...abeit a tad on the poor side but it's as good as I can get it. (after having struggled through about a hundred attempts)

Last two show the sidewall and the instrument panel/floor in together w/out glue yet.

all in all, it doesn't look too bad. The grip on the stick is testor's wood covered with clear orange. It looks bright red in the pictures but it's not. It's like a burgundy color

What colour will you give the cockpit? Natural metal, aotake or green?

Hans, the cockpit will remain natural metal as Hayate built late in the war were delivered without protective finish in this area (probably none in any other area as well).

Yeah, the PE instrument panel and other items really work well! I was very impressed with the instruments and the panel. I just had to use em, they looked too good not to.

Thanks for all the comments.... Cockpit is now installed (I did use the kit seat afterall, but with Eduard buckles. I found a picture of a seat with the cushion on the back and thought better of not using the kit seat. It's really not bad at all, just needs to be painted and detailed.) wings, rudder, horizontal stabs are on; engine has been assembled, painted and is on its bulkhead with the cowl flaps in the open position. That's as far as I got last night. More today with some pictures, hopefully.

Regards,

Tim

Ok, a few more from today's action :o

Flaps glued in the UP position as Hayate are normally seen.

shot of the seat with some detailing. (still needs more work I'm afraid, I don't like the high/low light job I did on it)

Drilled out the exhaust pipes for a more "realisitic" appearance.

Couple overall shots of the build in progress. Oh, the red stuff is Nitro Stain Spot putty. It's found in automotive stores and resembles the old Dr. Microtools stuff and dries in about 15 minutes (as long as you're using relatively light coats) This stuff I'll recommend hands down over anything I've used yet, including either of the Squadron putty's.

Lastly, how the flaps should look when they're in the retracted position. Note that the trailing edge of the flap extends beyond the trailing edge of the wing. That's correct for this aircraft.

Couple more tonight showing the paint, or lack thereof  Model has a gloss coat and is ready for decals. Paints I used are Tamiya J.A. Grey and Green over a Floquil Silver basecoat. Jury is still out as to whether or not I like this paint job, but I'm not changing it.

Hi Tim, that looks bloody superb......love your paint job, and I really would like to know your method of chipping effect. Please explain it for this paint chipping novice!

The (sorry, forgot to add "cockpit") ended up looking really neat and realistic too. Loving your work

Cheers

Ango
