bdthoresen
Sorry- that was Jay Laverty and Dave Pratt- I know too many Daves....LOL- Anyway, here is some more shots.......Some of the major pit parts base painted, washed and dry-brushed. I used a variation of Gregg Cooper's Aotake technique, simply because I could!!!!! Rear bulkhead.....

bdthoresen
Building the kit out-of -the-box, with no added details on this one. Parts were base painted a dark grey, heavily dry-brushed with MM Chrome Silver, then over sprayed with a tweaked version of Model Master's Aotake. I thinned it 70% with Lacquer Thinner, and sprayed it as a tint more than anything. Mixed some grey oil paint with Naptha, and washed all of the crevices. A dry brushing with model Master Aluminum followed. I am still detail painting some of the parts right now. I will post more pics in a day or two. You may have noticed that I did not paint all of the molded levers surfaces on the sidewalls- I only painted the tops of the levers to give more of an illusion of the proper thickness- I am building this OOB after all, and I will not modify anything on this kit. And before anyone tries to shoot me for spraying the interior parts Aotake, consider this- Over 3,000 Hayates were built during the war, in as many as a dozen different facilities at one point or another. Many companies, most notably Tachikawa, built parts or entire airframes for Nakajima at the order of the military. With that in mind, and the fact that I personally cannot atest to the interior conditions of all three-thousand + airframes, and seeing the remains of a Frank that used to be in Kermit Weeks' possesion, I believe that some were Aotake inside. Besides, it's my model and I'll paint it how I like it!!!! Thanks for letting me rant..... THOR
boness
looking good so far, as for colors, i think that argument will never end, and i dont think there will ever be a clear winner. jim
LSP_Matt
Looks great Thor . The Aotake reminds my eyes of a metalized version of the Ruskie Jet interiors. If its not, then I'm claiming colour blindness on that pesky Y chromosome. I like your rationale for the colour. he he. Sorry to hear about the Falcon seat. I know X 2 guys, one was canned by just before he was posted to F18's...another was Dutch and missed out on 16's as well. Too few seats for all of us putting up our hands. To me if it was being done just OOB its about as good as its going to get. Nice one. cheers Matt
bdthoresen
Matt + Jim- Thanks for the feedback guys. Jim I think you are right, there will never be a solid answer to the color interior color question. Matt, thank for the kind words. I do appreciate it! More to follow soon... LSP_Matt
I'm not trying to dig up old frustrations mate but how the hell could they let someone with a name like your NOT fly. I mean, how totally cool would it be for the unit to have a pilot with a decal of some kick ass hammer swingin Viking on a cockpit or tailplane. Its just gold for a fighter pilot...then again and even better...what about trying out for A10's in the Reserves?...now there's a plane your name would suit totally. Who can explain how the military pick people for certain tasks at times? Fair dunkum they picked me because I put my hand up but I seriously joined the wrong Corps. Instead of a Corps song like Star Wars Imperial March...accompanied by Darth Vader-like hissing...we have ...wait for it...Puff the bloddy magic dragon  Groan Yep...the lived by the sea one....Ye gads...couldn't they have come up with something even a little better? Cheerio Matt
bdthoresen
Puff the Magic Dragon? You gotta be kidding me..... Not too bad I missed out though, as I took on an adventure far greater than flying a Falcon.....I took on Fatherhood. My son and daughter are worth it. More pics to follow in a day or two........ PietvWdV
Man, I think you are spot on with your argument for Aotaki. Nobody can fault you. I also appreciate an out of the box build here. It helps to put things back into perspective and helps get one's mind back to the fact that most of these kits look pretty stunning right out of the box. Your painting work on the interior parts is very well done. I shall be pinching some of your techniques! All the best Piet
bdthoresen
Piet- Thanks for the kind words mano! I do appreciate it. I have plenty of super-detailed builds going at the moment, so I am kinda burnt out on them. Especially the Revell Ki-61. I am about 3/4 of the way through the cockpit, and also am working on the engine bay right now.....I need to get ahold of a decent DB-601 that I can slightly modify into the Japanese built version. But otherwise, it is going good. Also a P-51B in various stages at the moment. I still have a bit to do on the Frank interior though. I will be adding a seat harness and rudder straps from Masking Tape, and also need to blend the weathering a bit. I will post more pictures in a day or two. Thanks again for the kind words......
